Mystery death of 11-year-old schoolgirl whose body was found at home by her mother is still being investigated, coroner says

The inquest into the tragic death of an 11-year-old schoolgirl from Grimsby has opened. 

Roxy-Mae Barber’s death remains unexplained after she was found at an address in Whitby Drive, Grimsby on May 4 this year. 

Her grieving relatives attended the opening of proceedings at Cleethorpes Town Hall, where they were formally welcomed by North East Lincolnshire assistant coroner Marianne Johnson.

She told Roxy-Mae’s mother Tracy Woodliffe and her uncle Ben Woodliffe that she would be adjourning the inquest to a date to be fixed. She also confirmed the deceased was born in July 2010. 

‘I first want to express my condolences,’ she said to the family. ‘It must be a really difficult time.

 ‘She died on May 4, 2022 at her home. She was identified by Tracy Woodliffe. The cause of death is unexplained, pending investigation.’ 

The proceedings were adjourned to a date in January next year. 

There was a huge community outpouring of support and sympathy for the family following Roxy-Mae’s death, with her family’s garden being transformed into a colourful and poignant tribute.

A service to celebrate her life was held in early June, followed by a funeral service at Laceby cemetery. 

Mourners were urged to wear colourful clothes in her memory while donations were made to the RSPCA to reflect her love of animals.  

According to a funeral notice, Roxy-Mae left behind parents Mike and Tracy, stepmother Nikki, siblings Charlie, Ben and Mason and was a ‘cherished granddaughter, niece and cousin who will be sadly missed.’
