A shot of David Koresh from the new Netflix documentary about the Waco massacre
The Waco siege took place across February, March, and April of 1993, after government officials became concerned about allegations that Koresh was sexually abusing children and engaging in polygamy inside the compound of the Branch Davidians religious sect.
Koresh took control of the cult in the 80s, and convinced his followers he was a messiah and that the end of times were imminent.
The documentary trailer opens with a former cult member reminiscing on how members were originally drawn in, describing it as ‘a bunch of people that you could tell really loved each other.’
‘It was a very caring environment,’ she said.
It then cuts to Koresh talking to an interviewer about his followers, saying ‘they think I’m the son of god.’
Under his leadership, Koresh armed his followers with an arsenal of heavy weapons, including machine guns and hand grenades, which they used to deadly effect when the authorities tried to breach their compound.
Four FBI agents were killed during the siege, which resulted in the compound burning to the ground during the final assault while much of the cult was still inside. 82 cult members were killed, including 28 children.

Netflix’s new documentary also includes never before seen news footage from the siege
The documentary interviewed members of both sides of the conflict, including numerous former cult members who insist that government authorities fired on them first, and a government sniper who talked about aiming his rifle at Koresh during the conflict.
In the trailer, FBI agents can be seen breathlessly plotting how best to end the siege successfully and without harm to the children inside, while it cuts to intense footage of gunfire breaking out between agents and cult members.
According to a news release from Netflix, the documentary includes interviews with one of Koresh’s ‘spiritual wives,’ another woman who Koresh groomed to be a wife when she was underage, and journalists who participated in the rigorous frontline coverage of the siege and assault.
At the trailer’s close, Koresh can be heard being asked, ‘Do you put your trust in the lord?’ before he responds, ‘I am the lord.’
