A COUPLE have claimed their house is so mouldy they are sleeping on a mattress on the floor.

Nicky White, 36, says there is no central heating at her one-bed flat in Hove, Sussex, with damp and mildew left festering for years.

The mum-of-four claims she and husband Richard, 42, have had little help to resolve the matter, but their landlord disagrees – insisting they are the ones to blame.

Nicky, who is a full time carer for Richard, told The Sun Online: “The mould is mainly in the bedroom – we can’t sleep in there.

"It’s dangerous. We’re breathing it all in.

“We’re currently on a mattress in the front room on the floor. We’ve been there for four months now.

“We’ve got a memory foam mattress so it’s not so bad but it‘s not ideal.”

She added: “It's on clothes, most of the furniture in the bedroom is ruined.

When contacted by The Sun, Richard and Nicky’s landlord insisted the couple have “never asked for anything to be done”.

And she said “we haven't ignored them, they haven’t bothered to come and see us".

“They have heating and the council is giving them electric radiators," she said.

“They’ve got storage heaters at the moment.

“We had new storage heaters put in for them, we had new double glazed windows put in for them.

“It's because they don't open the windows – some of it might be down to the block and electric heating but I've got no problems, I open my windows, I ventilate and I heat."

She added: “They need to clean. If you’ve got damp and mould you need to wash it off – you don’t just leave it. I can’t clean for them.”

Nicky, who suffers from scoliosis, says the mattress is “not helping” her back.

She is also terrified the situation will badly affect Richard, whose health issues include chest problems.

Nicky said: “Mould can carry umpteen loads of infections. We‘ve been getting loads of mould sprays and things to try and clean it.

“There’s no adequate heating in our flat, we’ve got none whatsoever, we’ve just got two small heaters that we’ve brought ourselves.

“The landlord just doesn’t seem to want to do anything. There’s no gas or central heating in the whole block.”

Nicky's landlord, who heavily disputes the claims, said she is in contact with Brighton and Hove Council who have contacted her about Nicky and Richard’s living.

She also said she emailed them this week giving the go ahead for the couple to have electric heaters.

The landlord added: “As far as I'm concerned my managing agent is waiting to hear from them.

“They need to come and speak to me directly with a list of things they need doing, rather than going to the council.

“If they come to us with a problem we’ll sort it out.”

A spokesperson for Brighton and Hove Council said: “We were sorry to hear of Ms White’s circumstances.

"Our disabled facilities grants team got to work arranging for a grant for heaters to be installed as this property as soon as they were made aware of the situation.

“This is a private property, not a council one.

“Gaining approval from the private landlord has unfortunately led to some delays. However, this has been resolved and the heaters will now be installed as soon as possible.

“We believe this will solve the problems with mould. If it doesn’t we would invite either Ms White or her landlord to get back in touch with us for further advice."
