Thousands of costumed youngsters hit the town last night for a night of boozy celebration as Halloween festivities continued across the UK.

Partygoers in Portsmouth took to the streets in a huge range of weird and wonderful costumes on Saturday, from cowboys and cheerleaders to pirates and dragons.

Some took the spooky brief a little more seriously, dressing as Ghostbusters, blood-covered Little Red Riding Hoods and zombie brides and grooms.

Nottingham and Leeds were also packed with people dressed in a range of scary and not-so-scary costumes as clubbers enjoyed Saturday night celebrations in the city ahead of Halloween on Monday.

Thousands of partygoers also took to the streets of Newcastle, where friends dressed in a wonderful array of group costumes – from Scoobydoo characters to a posse of eight giant traffic cones.

Revellers were able to leave their jackets at home as they enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather, although some had to dodge occasional heavy showers which are set to continue for the rest of the Halloween weekend.

Many clubbers were also able to enjoy an extra-long night of celebration as some nightclubs stayed open an hour later due to the clocks going back at 2am this morning.

Police were out in force to keep the peace, in one of the busiest weekends for many forces around the country.

Most cities up and down the country remained calm, although scenes became increasingly more chaotic as the night wore on as revellers joined in the fun.
