Sun-baked British tourists in Portugal have told how they have had to shelter from the blazing heat-bomb that is devastating holiday resorts across Europe.

One family described how they were forced indoors after their daughter suffered sun-stroke.

And another holiday-maker revealed she was rendered almost unconscious after sitting on her balcony for just half an hour.

It comes as Britons across Europe are bracing themselves for record 48.8C temperatures after an anticyclone weather system from the Sahara desert called Cerberus expanded towards the Mediterranean.  

Back in the UK, Brits are far away from the sunshine with rain pouring down across the country including in London, Cardiff and Manchester

Ventilation engineer James Holland told MailOnline: ‘The heat has been extreme. We can barely go out because it’s so hot. Yesterday we had to go back to the apartment because the kids were getting heat stroke. Abbie almost passed out!

‘We went to the beach but there is no shade anywhere and they wanted Euro 60 for four sunbeds.’

Ventilation engineer James Holland told MailOnline: ‘The heat has been extreme. We can barely go out because it’s so hot. British tourists are seen sunbathing in Albufeira, Portugal, on Friday 

James, 43, from Ayr, Scotland, is on holiday with his partner Lesley-Anne, 44 and two children.

He added: ‘We like to do activities when we are on holiday but it’s just not possible.

‘We went to the supermarket yesterday and that was too much!’

Kendra Miller, 62, told MailOnline: ‘It’s been flaming hot. My husband likes to go for a walk in the afternoon, but I can’t do it. it’s just too hot.

‘I was sitting on the balcony yesterday but it had to go in and have a lie down because the heat was just unbearable.

‘We went down the beach at lunch-time but we only lasted about half an hour.’

Kendra, from Middlesborough, is on holiday with her husband Pat Miller, an engineer.

She added: ‘We’re here for a week. We’ve been before, but it was not like this. It was like 28 degrees at 10 o’clock in the morning. It’s been a real struggle.

Sunworshippers Lisa and Stuart Henderson revealed how the heat was even getting too much for them.

Lisa 40, told MailOnline: ‘We like it hot but it’s even been a bit tricky for us. Last night it was 31 degrees at the hotel when we were having our tea. 

‘There is a lot of shade at the hotel so you can keep out of the worst of it but it really is hot. We are going to try the beach today.

‘And if I can cope with 50 degrees in Dubai I should be ok here.’

Stuart, 41, an engineer, from Newcastle, added: ‘We are only away for a few days without the kids so we are going to make the most of it.’

Meanwhile, some sun-burnt families have told how they had already fallen victim to the searing heat and have had been forced to cancel activities.

Lucy McManus, 28, from London, told MailOnline: ‘It’s just so hot. This is got to be the hottest place I’ve ever been on holiday. It must have been 40 degrees yesterday.

‘It’s not comfortable at all.

‘I’m here with my grandparents and they are finding it really difficult. It’s so hot they are finding it hard to walk around.

‘So we are all staying in the shade.

‘We were planning to go out on a boat today but we’ve had to cancel because we are worried about getting sun-burnt.’

Her dad Dennis, 61, added: ‘We’ve been having lots of cold drinks and ice-creams to cool down.’

Dennis and Tracey Doherty from Luton have come to Albufeira for their honeymoon but they can only last half an hour on the beach.

Tracey, from Luton told MailOnline: ‘We’ve both got such pale skin that we can’t stay out in the sun without getting burnt.

‘We love being by the sea. But we can only last about half an hour before we have to go back into the shade.’

Mum Jane from Stockport has had to stay covered up after getting burnt.

She told MailOnline: ‘I burnt my shoulders really badly. Now I have to keep a t-shirt on.’

Her daughter Grace, 20, added: ‘We’ve popped down to the beach this morning but we couldn’t stay long.’

Sun-lover David Campbell cools off by regularly dousing himself with water.

David, 61, a service engineer from Manchester, who is on holiday with wife Gale said: ‘I love the sun but this is really too hot.

‘I like to feel the rays on my skin but I have to cool off.

‘We’ve been here for almost two weeks now and it has been hot every day. I love it.’

However other tourists had revealed how they are relishing the blinding sunshine.

Electrician Harry Turnbull told MailOnline: ‘I love the heat. The hotter it is the better for me. It makes me happy.’

Harry, 22, from Bolton, Lancs, is on holiday with his father David Turnbull, 47.

A group of French students told how the weather was easier to deal with than the stifling temperatures of the city.

Matilde told MailOnline: ‘We love it! it is hot but there is a breeze so that is cooling.

‘It is the same temperature in Paris but the heat is stifling there. Here it is much fresher.’

Matilde, 21, from Paris, was on holiday with friends, Marie, 20, Lea, 20, Adele, 21.
