Five people have been injured on a rollercoaster at Six Flags Great Adventure park in New Jersey after the ride 'hit a pot hole'.

The scary incident happened on the El Toro ride last night (August 25) according to Six Flags officials.

Following the incident, several riders said they were suffering from back pain which resulted in five of them being hospitalised, reports the New York Post.

Recounting the event, one woman who claimed to have been on the rollercoaster said the force of the jolt had made several people on the ride bite their tongues.

She said: "It felt like the rollercoaster hit a bolthole."

Following the incident, local police at the Jackson Township Police Department said that the injuries were mostly minor.

After the accident, the coaster was closed for the remainder of the day while checks were carried out.

The El Toro is one of the tallest wooden roller coasters in the world.

It is also one of the fastest and can reach speeds of 70 miles per hour.
