Row erupts as chip shop owner scrawls 'do not park here' over car

Furious neighbour row erupts as chip shop owner scrawls ‘do not park here’ over car which ‘keeps getting left in her space’… so who do YOU think is in the right?

  • The row erupted between Sharon Myers and Harleen Sohal over a parking space
  • Ms Sohal, 32, was captured on CCTV writing ‘do not park here’ on Ms Myers’s car

A furious row has erupted between a chip shop owner and her neighbour after the businesswoman was caught scrawling ‘do not park here’ over the other woman’s car.

Sharon Myers noticed the graffiti on her red Suzuki Swift, which she had parked opposite her flat, outside HK Fish Bar in Scunthorpe on July 19.

The words ‘do not park here’ had been written in black pen across her windscreen, driver’s door, bonnet and window.

The 53-year-old checked her CCTV to find out who the culprit was, and spotted the owner of the fish bar, Harleen Sohal, writing on her car, having already appeared to have written on another vehicle.

The words ‘do not park here’ had been written in black pen across Ms Myers’s windscreen, driver’s door, bonnet and window.

Ms Myers claims she went to confront Ms Sohal, 32, who she says admitted she was responsible.

Ms Myers reported the incident to the police and shared a picture online, where the owner of another vehicle commented, claiming their car had also been vandalised.

An image appears to show a second vehicle with the phrase ‘do not park here loser’ written on it.

Ms Myers said she was ‘horrified’ by the incident and claims that Ms Sohal had also blocked her car in.

‘I was absolutely fuming,’ she said. ‘She’s taken the law into her own hands. It seems like she went on a bit of a rage.

‘I was going out to the shop and I noticed something on the back of my car. It said ‘do not park here’ on the driver’s door, window, bonnet and windscreen.

‘I thought it was permanent marker so I went to rub it off but I left it so I could ring the police. I checked the CCTV and she did someone else’s and walked straight over to mine. She seemed to go on a rampage.

‘She has clearly been caught no matter what. It’s criminal damage. She doesn’t have the right whether it’s a private car park or not.

‘I went and confronted her. When I walked in, she said hello with a big smile on her face like she hadn’t done anything. I started shouting at her asking what gives her the right to draw on my car.

‘I told her I had CCTV and she didn’t seem bothered. She wanted vengeance on whoever was parked there that day.’

Ms Sohal admits that she wrote on the vehicle, but states that the space belongs to her and that she is at her ‘wits end’ with Ms Myers parking there. She claims she has asked Ms Myers not to park in the space several times, and has been forced to park on double yellow lines.

A sign next to the space reads: ‘Private cark park. No public right of way. All vehicles parked at their user’s risk’.

‘She’s aware it’s my space, which she’s denying’, Ms Sohal said. ‘I’ve got the lease. She doesn’t even live here. She lives across the road.

‘I did write on the car. I’m not denying it. You can wipe it off, simple. I didn’t scratch it or touch her car. She’s just made a big issue.

‘If she’s going to park on my land next to a sign saying park at your own risk, why is she causing an issue? I don’t know what to do. I’m at my wits end.

‘Believe it or not the car is still out there. I have to go through solicitors to see what my rights are. I understand it’s not right but for how long will it go on?

‘If I get a parking ticket every day who is going to pay for it? Is she going to pay for it? I’m helpless. I don’t know what to do. It’s in the town centre and I have to park on double yellow lines when there’s a space that I pay for.

‘I’m paying the bills so how is she parking in my space for months even though she’s been told verbally and I wrote on a piece of paper ‘kindly, do not park here. Thank you’.’

Harleen Sohal, the owner of HK Fish Bar, admitted she wrote on the vehicle, but states that the space belongs to her and that she is at her ‘wits end’ with Ms Myers parking there

Ms Myers denies seeing the previous note on her car.

‘We pay for it’, Ms Sohal added. ‘Everyone struggles to park. I had a word with her last month. If she’s saying she didn’t receive a note she’s lying.

‘She wrote a note on my car [on July 19] saying ‘stay away from my car you wet wipe’. She’s creating drama on social media and ruining my business’s reputation and it’s not fair.’

Ms Myers, who is a mother-of-five, claims Ms Sohal usually blocks her in when she parks in the space, or honks her horn until she moves. She claims the space is not directly in front of the shop.

She now says she is ‘nervous’ to leave her car in the area, and feels ‘uncomfortable’ at having Ms Sohal.

‘She’s blocked me in a couple of times but she does that to everyone and she sits there and beeps her horn’, Ms Myers said. ‘It’s a public space. You can park five or six cars there.

‘It’s uncomfortable because she works there every day. I’m nervous about leaving my car there now because you don’t know what she’s going to do.

‘Hopefully after this we can find out exactly who owns the land. The law is the law and its criminal damage and you can’t get away with that. I want people to be aware it’s a criminal offence and this person isn’t allowed to go around damaging vehicles because people are parked there.’

A Humberside Police spokesperson said: ‘Officers are investigating reports of criminal damage after a car is believed to have been graffitied over on Gilliat Street, Scunthorpe yesterday (Wednesday 19 July).

‘We’re conducting lines of enquiry to establish the circumstances and would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, has CCTV or dashcam footage from around the time the incident occurred, to contact us on our non-emergency number 101 quoting crime reference 23*102822.’
