Footage from Ukraine has captured a horrifying blunder by a Russian soldier after he mistakenly greeted President Zelensky’s troops believing they were members of his own army. The Kremlin soldier told advancing Ukrainian forces: “I’m surprised to see you here”. The clip, recorded by Ukraine’s military, captured the moment of shocking realisation as the soldiers revealed their true identity to the Russian serviceman. The exchange occurred as Ukrainian forces advanced into Russian-occupied territory as part of a counter-offensive operation to reclaim land.
The video emerged on Twitter, shared by media organisation Visegrad 24.
A caption accompanying the footage read: “His facial expression changes when they say that they are actually Ukrainian soldiers. The war is over for him.”
The Russian soldier’s apparent lack of knowledge surrounding Kremlin army operations is unsurprising given intelligence reports of poor military leadership and weak communication networks.
The UK Ministry of Defence claimed fatalities of military commanders on the battlefield in addition to a series of leadership dismissals has compounded Russian tactical and operational difficulties.
Since September, the Ukrainian forces have focused military efforts on a counter-offensive operation in the east and south of the country.
Ukrainian authorities have reported their military has liberated over 2,000 square kilometres of land from Russian control in the weeks since the mission began.
President Zelensky announced: “Izyum, Balakliya, Kupyansk and the Kharkiv region in general are the cities and communities that we have liberated.”
He declared Ukrainian troops would also continue the battle to liberate areas in the south, including Mariupol, Melitopol and Kherson. The advancing Ukrainian military have also made gains in the Donbas region as the army hopes to free Donetsk and Luhansk from Russian occupiers.

The Kremlin attempted to legitimise Russia’s claim to occupied territories in Ukraine by conducting a series of pseudo-referendums among the civilian population.
World leaders branded the “sham” votes as Ukrainian citizens are forced to cast their ballot in the presence of armed Russian troops.
The UK Foreign Office stated: “The referendums in Ukraine are illegal – they take place without the agreement of the Ukrainian Government.
“They are a blatant attempt by Russia to annex Ukrainian territory. They will not be recognised by the international community.”
Moscow’s appointed officials in the controlled regions have declared the referendums demonstrated almost total support for sections of Ukraine to be annexed by Russia. Kremlin media reported up to 99 percent of people voted in favour of joining the Russian Federation.

Putin is expected to address to both houses of the Russian Parliament on Friday, and could make a formal announcement regarding the annexation of occupied regions.
The UK Ministry of Defence suggested the Kremlin aimed to “consolidate patriotic support” for the invasion of Ukraine following the outbreak of anti-war demonstrations across the country.
Protests erupted in major cities across Russia in response to President Putin’s partial mobilisation decree, ordering an additional 300,000 reserve troops to the frontline.
An intelligence report declared Moscow should be warned of an “increasing domestic awareness” to Russia’s military failings in Ukraine as hundereds of thousands have fled across land borders into neighbouring countries.
