People in the UK have reacted in shock after the Daily Star revealed the fate of one of television's most infamous houses.

Earlier this week, we told how the sprawling cliffside mansion once dubbed the 'saddest ever' Grand Designs property, had finally gone on the market for a whopping £10million.

The extraordinary Chesil Cliff House is designed in the style of a lighthouse and has sat empty and imposing on the cliffs of Croyde, Devon for years due to development hell that has blighted the owner.

Since appearing on Channel 4's Grand Designs with his ambitious project in October 2019, Edward Short, 52, had been through the wringer with Covid, issues with contractors and financial stress placing the project at a bitter stalemate.

The burden the white elephant of a house placed on Edward's personal life was also heavy as the exhausting process led him to separate from his wife Hazel.

It was initially promised that the mansion would be on the market for a cool £10m by the end of 2021.

However, this timeline never materialised due to a range of problems ranging from Covid-19 complications to difficulties with the temperature-sensitive tiling on the mansion's pool.

It is set to go on sale shortly with a £10m asking price, and will return to Grand Designs in the autumn for an update episode.

And Reddit users shared their thoughts on the development.

One user, going by the name of Chilton_Squid wrote: “I remember watching this one in absolute amazement, as this guy with lots of money rapidly ran out of money but just carried on taking out loans from friends, private investments, just grabbing money hand over fist as the project fell apart.

“As ill-fated projects go, I find it hard to have sympathy for this guy unfortunately.

“I mean, he literally built it on a cliff knowing it was eroding away underneath and would end up on stilts.”

Another user, SitsAndGoogles, actually saw the house while out walking recently. They wrote: “I walked past this house last year when walking.

“I had no idea but you can see there is scaffolding to the left.

“Funny thing is there is an old dilapidated cottage/lookout post opposite (which I love). It's a stunning location.”

And another user watched the episode after reading the Daily Star's story.

They claimed that they could see the warning signs right from the start.

They wrote: “It doesn’t even seem like a good idea near the beginning.

“Fascinating to watch him dig his heels in and drag his family along with this narcissistic fantasy. It’s all about the dad in the family and the wife and kids seem to sort of just have to go along.”

And finally, one user simply wrote: “This episode game me a second-hand panic attack.”

The air date of the Grand Designs return show has yet been publicly released.
