A savvy mum from Merseyside has saved ‘hundreds’ by installing a ‘DIY’ laundry chute in her home – so her kids don’t have to come downstairs to get rid of their dirty washing.
Lyndsey Gynane has been renovating her property with her 43-year-old husband Shaun Gynane for the last year, and said building a laundry chute in her home was ‘non-negotiable’.
But after researching the prices online to have one installed, the mum-of-two decided to create her own DIY version to cut costs.
The 45-year-old said it was her idea to create the three-and-a-half-metre chute in her two-storey home, but says the handy work was carried out by Shaun with help from a builder.
Lyndsey said the feature cost less than £200 to create and now, thanks to her washing slide, she is able to complete her laundry tasks with ease.

The ‘hidden’ laundry chute has been installed in the main family bathroom on the second-floor of the property and allows clothes to drop down a floor, straight into a cupboard in the utility room on the ground-floor – next to the washing machine.
In a video filmed by Lyndsey, she demonstrated the contraption by putting dirty clothes in the chute and running down the stairs to reveal the garments had swiftly arrived into a basket in her utility room cupboard.
The travel network marketer said her children love the ‘novelty’ design and says she can now ‘shout’ up to her kids to throw down their dirty laundry without having to leave the utility room.
The clip went viral online where its ingenuity wowed viewers, though some questioned if it might have been easier to move the washing machine upstairs.
Lyndsey, from Cronton in Merseyside, said: ‘When we bought the home in 2021, there were a couple of things in the renovation that were non-negotiable for me. One was a hot water tap and the other was a laundry chute.’
The family bought the house as a one-storey, three-bedroom bungalow in 2021 for £617,000 and they are spending £300,000 on renovations.
They estimate it will be worth a million pounds once completed, but it is their forever home so they’re not looking at putting it on the market.
She explained: ‘The laundry chute helps to make my life a bit easier which is what every mum wants.

Lyndsey said: ”The washing goes down the chute in the bathroom straight into a basket in a cupboard in the utility room. It’s a great way for everyone to do their bit and help around the house to keep it tidy’
‘When you have kids they just leave the washing all over the floor so, by installing one of these in the main family bathroom, everyone can use it.

‘As a mum I am in the utility room all the time so when I am I just shout to the kids to bring any dirty washing down and they just put it in the chute without me even having to go up and get it.
‘The material for the chute cost £120 and with installation costs, we were able to do it all for under £200.
‘If people knew you could DIY one and install a laundry chute for £200, why wouldn’t you want one.
‘You can buy one of these chutes for your home but they are very expensive and by making our own it has saved us hundreds of pounds.’
The laundry chute took five days to build and was created using flexible ducting and plaster boards.
Shaun, Lyndsey’s husband, said: ‘We bought a 12-inch flexible duct as the chute had to go over a floor joist to be installed and this made sure the clothes didn’t get stuck in the tube.
‘The drop (from the family bathroom to the basket in the utility room) is three-and-a-half-metres and we have hidden the chute in the wall so the laundry just appears in the basket below.’

After creating her DIY laundry chute, Lyndsey uploaded a video of the installation to TikTok which has since wracked up more than 35,000 likes.
She said whilst the majority of people love the time-saving device, a couple of users did criticise her latest house renovation hack.
Lyndsey, who moved into their family home in August this year, said: ‘People have said to me why don’t I just move my washing machine and dryer upstairs, but this is not me.
‘I don’t want a banging washing machine and dryer going off throughout the day. It doesn’t suit my lifestyle and I don’t want a washing room upstairs.
‘The option of installing a quick, easy and affordable washing chute is so much better. I’d rather use my space upstairs for office space.
‘It’s not a lazy thing either. I just laugh at people in the comments saying negative things.
‘For me this is a clever hack that saves time and I hope people get inspiration from my video.
‘Most people love it and I’ve had lots of friends saying they want their husband’s to install one now as it is so affordable.’
One person said: ‘Oh my God, I love this!’
Another added: ‘Planning on doing the exact same thing in my new house.’
