Sex-crazed ‘gay’ triple-murderer on death row hacks off his PENIS with broken glass and razor blade after he’s denied special food package

A ‘gay’ Tennessee death row inmate has cut off his own penis with a razor blade and broken glass in his prison cell after he was refused a special food package by prison guards who stopped feeding the inmate for smearing feces in his cell.

Henry Eugene Hodges, 56, embarked on the shocking act of self-harm at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution earlier this month after being denied a special food package he’d ordered.

Hodges was eligible to receive it for six months behavior. He ordered the package after five months of an unblemished record and is said to have flown into a rage after he was denied it.

That sparked a dirty protest by Hodges in his cell, who slit his wrists and was taken to the prison infirmary. He later severed his manhood during a two hour self-harm session using broken window shards and razor blades he’d kept hidden.

Hodges’ penis was later reattached by surgeons. It’s unclear how successful that operation has been. 

He was convicted of the strangulation and robbery of Nashville phone repairman Ronald Bassett in 1990. That saw him handed a death sentence in 1992. 

Later, he was convicted of a separate murder in Fulton County, Georgia, for the killing of a North Carolina chemical engineer Michael Whisnant in an Atlanta hotel.

The known killer also received another life sentence in 1992 after pleading guilty to the stabbing of Inglewood nurse Barry McDonald in 1989.

Reports at the time of the murders claimed the crimes were connected to his repressed homosexuality and a deep desire to seek revenge after he was sexually abused as a child. Hodges, who is bipolar, denies he is gay, despite reports of multiple sexual relationships with men.

Hodges is said to have been a gay rent boy in Nashville during his 20s who dazzled locals with his hunky looks – but who subsequently developed a reputation for violent behavior, leading local gay bars to warn prospective lovers off him. 

When visited by his attorney Kelley Henry at the infirmary of the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, Hodges was allegedly kept naked in 4-point and 6-poit restraints for a week, Yahoo news reported.

Henry plans to file a complaint in state court on Friday alleging violations of Hodge’s constitutional rights.

‘He needs competent mental health care,’ she said.

‘Surely the prison can find a place to put him where he is not a danger to himself or others and does not have to be tied down like an animal.’

He is on death row in relation to three murders from late 1980 to early 1990 believed to be linked to his repressed sexual orientation and a desire to seek revenge for his abuse as a child

She said Hodges had become upset earlier this month and began smearing feces in his cell after prison officials refused him his special food package.

The known killer was then refused food in order to stop him smearing feces – his response was to slit his wrists with a razor.

When taken to the infirmary Henry told Yahoo News that he asked to be put on suicide watch, when a ‘high ranking correctional officer’ told the person treating Hodges that he was being manipulated.

Hodges was then taken back to his cell where he used broken glass from a window he’d shattered and hidden razors to hack off his penis, within a 2-hour period.

Hodges was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where surgeons reattached his penis.

‘He is enduring ongoing psychiatric harm as a result of these conditions,’ Henry said.

Hodges is also on hunger strike, she added.

The court of criminal appeals of Tennessee at Nashville heard in 1995 that Hodges had been sexually abused by a stranger when he was twelve.

Court documents reveal that he never revealed the abuse ‘because his father was homophobic and the appellant felt his mother would blame him for the occurrence.’

At the time of the 1990 murders Hodges had been ‘engaging in homosexual male prostitution’ the documents revealed.

Reports at the time of the murders described Hodges as ‘sexually confused’

The documents said ‘the appellant wanted revenge for the sexual abuse that he encountered in his childhood and viewed homosexuals as a class rather than individuals.’

A report from the Atlanta Constitution in September 1990 described Hodges as ‘sexually confused.’

‘Once the drag queens and gays along seven blocks of Broadway swooned over the street hustler’s rippling muscles, piercing eyes and quiet demeanor,’ it read.

‘Now they know he is an accused serial killer who has pleaded guilty to an Atlanta slaying.’

Anthony Odems, one of Nashville’s premier drag queens, told the paper he was ‘astonished’ to hear the news.

‘He had been sitting up in my house and on my furniture and could have killed me and my kids,’ they said.

The report claims Hodges has denied to police that he is gay while a former lover told the paper said he would often repress his sexual orientation.

‘He liked to get drunk and high, and when he started coming down, then something snapped and he felt like he shouldn’t be doing this – that he was wrong,’ he said.

‘He had to be high to be gay.’

The former lover who asked not to be named said he was ‘gay to a certain extent.’

Hodges has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder mixed type with psychotic episodes, Henry said.

He has taken medication in the past after a psychotic episode, but then stopped, she continued.
