'She doesn't care about what I do': Inside Russell Brand's marriage

Russell Brand describes his wife of six years, Laura Gallacher, as a ‘calm, beautiful woman’ and ‘not interested’ in his fame after praising her for being the reason his life changed: ‘She doesn’t care about what I do’

  • Russell Brand news LIVE: Sex allegations against comedian are being probed

Since his whirlwind marriage with pop superstar Katy Perry fell apart inside 14 months, the once promiscuous Russell Brand has been living a much quieter life with his wife of six years Laura Gallacher.

That was until the maverick actor and stand-up comic was this weekend accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse from four women between 2006 to 2013 at the height of his fame.

The allegations have sent shockwaves across the entertainment industry and have forced the BBC and Channel 4 – whom Brand worked for at the time – to launch urgent probes.

Brand’s wife Laura – the sister of Sky Sports star Kirsty Gallacher and daughter of golfer Bernard Gallacher, 87, is yet to break her silence on the allegations and has deleted her Instagram, although friends claim she will stand by him.

The comedian has previously opened up about how his wife – whom he married near their home in Henley-on-Thames, Oxon, in August 2017, is not fussed about what he gets up to and is ‘not interested’ in his showbiz lifestyle.

After slowing down from his life of promiscuity, drugs and alcohol to wed Laura, Brand told The Guardian in 2017: ‘I’ve never had domesticity before. Most of my life has been an extension of the grandiose idea of what glamour would look like if it had to have a kitchen.

‘And I feel sometimes like a refugee in my house with this woman, this calm, beautiful woman, who in the most beautiful way possible doesn’t care about what I do. She’s not interested, in the most delightful way.’

Speaking to Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes on This Morning in October the same year, the comedian revealed that his wife would probably not even watch his interview, as he praised his spouse for being the reason he turned his life around.

He said: ‘My life has changed so much. My wife is brilliant. She doesn’t care about this showing off, I bet she isn’t even watching this!

‘She’s not interested,’ he continued. ‘She just wants me to pick up the dog poo from the garden.’

Brand reiterated his comments about his wife’s lack of interest in his fame during an interview with the Stylist magazine. ‘She fully loves me for what I am,’ he said. ‘She’s not interested in the famous person at all.’

He also told ITV’s Lorraine in 2017: ‘I was watching my wife singing to our daughter, I thought wow this is happening, I am the father in this relationship, it felt beautiful.’

Brand and his wife, who recently created the online shop The Joy Journal which sells unique jeans, were reunited in a chance meeting on a canal in London’s East End eight years ago. They had dated some years before when she was 18-years-old.

Both were reeling from respective heartbreaks; Brand from his failed marriage to Katy Perry and Laura from her own break up.

Despite the sordid claims of raping a woman up against a wall in Brand’s LA home and assaulting a 16-year-old school girl, Ms Gallacher is, for now, standing by her husband as she always has.

‘What Russell did was firmly in the past, way before he and Laura met.’ a friend said.

‘Of course it isn’t easy but they are determined to get through this.’

Sky Sports star Kirsty appeared to show support for her brother-in-law as she shared a video of Brand pleading his innocence the night before the allegations were published in a joint investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4 Dispatches.

After the bombshell claims were made, the TV star – who introduced her sister to Brand in 2007 – later deleted her Instagram ‘story’ which had a large red love heart above Brand’s video.

The Met Police said today that it had received an allegation of sexual assault against Brand in Soho in 2003 after urging victims to come forward.

Brand and his wife – who have two young daughters – Mabel and Penny – and are now expecting a third child are hosting a wellness retreat together next summer about ‘personal awakening and social change’.

The three-day ‘Community’ camping event, which costs between £160 and £210 will feature ‘conversation on spirituality, wellness, healthy living and our environment’.

When addressing the allegations, Brand said that along with the ‘extremely egregious and aggressive attacks’, the investigating newspapers also came to him with ‘some pretty stupid stuff, like my community festival should be stopped’.

Brand’s wife was once interviewed herself about how her marriage with the eccentric comedian came about on the Made by Mammas podcast.

‘I hadn’t seen Russell for years,’ Gallacher recalled. ‘He was so different. We both immediately knew it was going to be serious.’

She explained: ‘You have to rebuild your foundations and trust again, we did it the right way. It was very slow, it was getting to know each other and going out on day trips together.’

Laura also told Grazia about the day they ran into each other in 2015 after her ex had ‘literally moved out of our flat that day and I was heartbroken, with mascara running down my face’.

‘A friend dragged me out on a walk to the canal in east London, where I’d never been in my life, and as we came on to the footpath Russell was standing there, like he’d organised it,’ she added.

She later told You after they resumed dating: ‘I remember him saying, ‘I think I want a quiet life and a family,’ and it was exactly what I wanted. So, then it was about seeing if we could build a foundation to make that happen.’

Laura is said to be ‘kind natured’ and despite coming from a high profile family, happy to stay out of the limelight.

Apart from the odd appearance on 48-year-old Brand’s much-watched YouTube channel either making squishy soap or garden baking trays, she keeps her head down. There are no red carpet appearances, and any pictures of the pair are paparazzi shots.

She’s the stay-at-home mum who cooks him pesto pasta or frozen pie and chips for dinner and follows him around the world, quietly supporting on his tours.

She was of course nowhere to be seen when Brand made his two minute video on Friday night when he insisted that the relationships he had were ‘absolutely always consensual’ adding that he was ‘very, very promiscuous.’

In June, Brand revealed that the couple were expecting a third child on the podcast The Diary of a CEO.

During the interview, an emotional Brand told Bartlett how fatherhood had transformed his life.

He said: ‘It taught me there is a lot more important in this world than me.’

Brand added: ‘There’s a lot more important stuff in this world than what I want, think or reckon. It taught me that love is real. It teaches you everything to become a father. All lessons are there.’

Russell Brand’s comments in full:

Hello there you awakening wonders. Now this is not the usual type of video we make on this channel where we critique, attack and undermine the news in all its corruption because in this story I am the news.

I have received two extremely disturbing letters – or a letter and an email – one from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks, as well as some pretty stupid stuff, like my community festival should be stopped and I shouldn’t be able to attack mainstream media narratives on this channel.

But amidst this litany of astonishing rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute. These allegations pertain to a time when I was in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies, and as I’ve written about extensively in my books I was very, very promiscuous.

During that time of promiscuity the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent, and I am being transparent about it now as well.

And to see that transparency metastasized into something criminal that I absolutely deny makes me question is there another agenda at play.

Particularly when we have seen coordinated media attacks before, like Joe Rogan where he dared to take a medicine the mainstream media didn’t approve of and we saw a spate of headlines of media outlets around the world using the same language.

I am aware that you guys in the comments have been for a while saying ‘watch out Russell, they’re coming for you,’ ‘you are getting too close to the truth’, ‘Russell Brand did not kill himself’.’

I know a year ago there was a spate of articles: Russell Brand is a conspiracy theorists; Russell Brand is right wing.

I am aware of newspapers making phone calls, sending letters to people I know. For ages and ages, it’s been clear to me or at least feels to be there’s a serious and consorted agenda to control these kinds of spaces and these kind of voices.

I need my voice along with your voice. I don’t mind them using my books and my stand up to talk about my promiscuous sexual conduct in the past. What I seriously refute are these very, very serious, criminal allegations.

Also its worth mentioning that there are witnesses whose evidence directly contradicts the narratives that these two mainstream media outlets are trying to construct, apparently in what seems to be to me a coordinated attack.

Now, I don’t want to get into this any further because of the serious nature of the allegations but I feel like I’m being attacked and plainly they are working very closely together.

We are obviously going to look into this matter because it is very, very serious.

In the meantime, I want you to stay close, stay awake but more importantly than any of that, if you can stay free.
