Spanish actor Gabriel Guevara arrested at Venice Film Festival after being subject of international arrest warrant stemming from allegations of sexual assault in France

Spanish actor Gabriel Guevara has been arrested on the fringes of Venice Film Festival, following an international arrest warrant for alleged sexual assault in France. 

The star of Prime Video’s My Fault was taken into custody by Italian State Police after being apprehended by officers in Venice on Saturday, a day before he was tipped to receive an award.

The 22-year-old teen idol is currently in protected custody, with charges against him remaining unknown, according to Variety.

The emerging actor was not an official guest of the film festival’s 80th edition, but had turned up for a non-official event taking place at the Hotel Excelsior on Sunday.

Mr Guevara is believed to have been expecting to receive the event’s il Filming Italy (Filming Italy) Best Movie International Award Young Generation for his performance in My Fault.

Filming Italy has no connection the main Venice Film Festival, and takes place on the sidelines as a fringe event. 

The organizers of the il Filming Italy Best Movie Award initiative told local news agency Ansa, that they had ‘suspended any recognition as a precaution, waiting for the nature of the facts concerning him [Guevara] to be ascertained and with complete confidence that justice will take its course.’ 

The Venice court of appeals is expected to rule on whether Mr Guevara’s case means that he will have to be extradited. 

Venice Film Festival issued a statement that read: ‘Following the news articles which have been emerging on various websites, regarding the Spanish actor Gabriel Guevara being arrested in Venice, the Biennale hereby clarifies that his presence in Venice was not linked to any events or productions related to the 80th Venice International Film Festival.​’

Mr Guevara, who has a strong fanbase with millions of social media followers, made his debut on the Spanish adaptation of Nordic teen series ‘Skam,’ before his his break in Amazon’s ‘My Fault.’
