Parents are fuming and a school is investigating after a teacher reportedly taped a "chatty" 11-year-old student's mouth closed in the US.

The mother of North Carolina boy Brady Webster said he can be talkative and a class clown, but she's fuming at how a Smithfield Middle School teacher allegedly handled his behavior.

An English and language arts teacher at the school in the town of Smithfield is subject to an investigation by the headmaster after the female staff member allegedly used painter's tape on the boy's face.

The mother – Catherine Webster- said her son sent her a selfie from school, with tape over his face on February 14.

“So, I asked, ‘What is that? Who did that?’ And he didn’t respond," she said.

“Just layer after layer, there were some pieces that went right up to his lower eyelid. So, I showed the principal the photo, and she took us into her office."

From there, an investigation within the school system began, Fox 19 reported.

The mother said: “It had been going on, you know, about two months, and it had happened to several kids in the classroom. And sometimes she tapes some kids’ wrists together. Sometimes she tapes their mouth."

Brady told his mother he was “humiliated”, but said he didn't question his teacher's actions for fear of reprisal.

Johnston County Schools said the teacher, who was hired in August 2022, resigned on February 17,- three days after the photograph surfaced.

The school system said in a statement that a "thorough review" is underway.

“We can confirm that whenever such allegations arise, our administration responds swiftly by investigating the allegations and, sometimes, by removing staff from classrooms pending completion of a thorough review,” it said.

The Sheriff's office also investigated after other parents complained but eventually decided there wasn’t enough to warrant an assault charge.

“It’s a very lucky thing that Brady doesn’t have some condition like asthma. I want to know who is going to be holding people accountable when they do things like this and make these errors in judgment,” Webster added.
