An 18-year-old girl lured a vulnerable victim to a river bank where he was degraded, attacked and stripped naked by a robbery gang while she filmed it.

Helena Nash told a 20-year-old man to meet her at Pebble Beach in Alvaston but when he got there Ryan Dodd, 19, and Callum Richards, 18, were lying in wait, Derby Crown Court heard.

The prosecution played footage of what they said was ’36 seconds of gratuitous violence’ during which the 20-year-old can be heard screaming as he was stamped on, kicked and then stripped naked.

Judge Shaun Smith QC said: ‘It was decided to lure him to the scene, a public place, on the pretext that you, Nash, were going to have some kind of liaison with him all along knowing that Dodd and Richards would appear at the scene and at the very least frighten him.

‘It went way, way, way beyond that and what happened at Pebble Beach was caught on camera because you, Nash, filmed it on your camera.

‘It was utterly distressing, even with what I have seen in my 40 years in my job, to see that young man on the screen naked, kicked, stamped and deprived of his belongings.

‘It was described as “36 seconds of gratuitous violence” and that is an apt description, it was sickening to watch.’

Helena Nash, 18, (pictured) has been sent to a young offender institute for 16 months after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting a robbery. The ‘honeytrap’ lured a 20-year-old man to Pebble Beach in Alvaston, Derby where he was then beaten and robbed while Nash filmed it

Robert Underwood, prosecuting, said the victim was vulnerable as he had spent his life growing up in care.

The prosecutor said Nash called him and asked him to meet her at Pebble Beach, on the bank of the River Derwent, wearing his brand-new clothes on May 15 2021.

Mr Underwood said: ‘It was a honey trap that lured him there, it is clear to see that between Miss Nash and Mr Dodd it was their plan to lure (the victim) to that location and do him some harm and that’s exactly what happened.

‘When he got there the others approached him, pushed him to the floor and he was assaulted. What followed was 36 seconds of gratuitous violence which was all filmed by Miss Nash.

‘The young man was left distressed, he had to retrieve what was left of his clothing from the water as it had been thrown in by those who had assaulted him. Thankfully a cyclist came along, saw him in distress and rang the police.’

The prosecutor said the gang stole a phone, a portable speaker, some keys and cash from the victim, which have never been recovered.

Ryan Dodd, 19, (pictured) and Callum Richards, 18, were lying in wait for the 20-year-old, Derby Crown Court heard. Dodd pleaded guilty to robbery and has been sent to a young offender institute for three years and nine months

Richards (pictured) pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and was sent to a young offender institute for three years. Chris Aspinall, mitigating, said the 18-year-old is ‘easily influenced’

He said at a later date, on February 8 of this year, Richards carried out a second robbery where he pushed a 14-year-old schoolboy off his scooter as he rode it to school and took it.

Dodd, 19, of Chaddesden, pleaded guilty to robbery and has a previous conviction for possession of a bladed article on school premises from 2016 on his record.

He was sent to a young offender institute for three years and nine months.

Justin Ablott, his barrister, said: ‘He works full-time in a branch of Subway and is doing rather well, his mother is in court and she is appalled by what she has seen.’

Richards, of Sunny Hill, pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and has a previous robbery to his name when he produced an axe and demanded the victim hand over his wallet. He was sent to a young offender institute for three years.

Chris Aspinall, mitigating, said: ‘The (pre-sentence) report writer says he is easily influenced and is only likely to offend when he is with others and not on his own.’

Nash, 18, of Chaddesden, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting a robbery and has no previous convictions. She was sent to a young offender institute for 16 months.

David Watts, her barrister, said: ‘When she got involved in setting this up she thought the complainant was going to be frightened. The level of violence used was not something she anticipated.

‘If sent to custody she would be extremely vulnerable, she was bullied at school but at school you can retreat.’
