A MURDER probe has been launched after two children died and a woman was left fighting for life in a fire.

The blaze tore through the first-floor flat in Nottingham at around 3.17am today.

Two children aged three and one were declared dead in hospital following the horror.

A woman was also taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

Police confirmed the fire in the two-storey block was started deliberately.

A murder investigation has been launched but it is not yet clear if any arrests have been made.

Shocking pictures show a blackened open window on the flat, which is on a small residential street.

Neighbouring houses had to be evacuated while firefighters tackled the blaze.

Inspector Ben Lawrence, of Nottinghamshire Police, said members of the local community should expect a high presence of officers in the area whilst a scene remains in place and inquiries continue.

He said: “This tragic incident has resulted in two children sadly losing their lives and my thoughts, first and foremost, are with their loved ones at this time.

“We understand residents living nearby will be shocked by this news and have concerns about what happened.

“We will continue to maintain a policing presence in the area and we will be working to reassure them as best we can in the coming days.

“If anyone has any concerns I'd encourage them to speak to one of our officers.”

Nottinghamshire Police are now appealing for anyone who saw something suspicious to get in touch.

They continue to investigate the blaze alongside Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.
