An unruly Jet2 passenger was allegedly tasered and dragged off a flight after his behaviour forced pilots to divert a plane on its way to Tenerife, causing a 27-hour delay to holidaymakers.

The flight which departed from Edinburgh was forced to land on Porto Santo Island in Madeira, Portugal – more than 300 miles away from its destination, Tenerife.

Video obtained by Portuguese newspaper Diário de Notícias shows a 26-year-old man being hauled across the runway by four airport security staff members wearing yellow hi-vis jackets after he was removed from the plane.

In the background, a second female passenger can be seen being ejected off the plane by a further two security officers.

As the man is taken across the runway with his hands behind his back, he is filmed trying to wrestle himself out of the firm grip of the security personnel but to no avail.

Several airport security staff were required to escort the passenger across the runway after he was removed from the aircraft

When a fifth security guard arrives at the scene, the passenger, wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, a blue t-shirt and white trainers, aggressively shouts in his direction. 

The latest incident on a Jet2 aircraft comes after an ‘extremely drunk’ passenger allegedly tried to open a plane door earlier this month, while another holidaymaker was removed from a flight after allegedly ‘urinating on his brother’.

This time around, Portuguese police said that the ‘disorderly’ passenger’s behaviour ‘raised immediate concerns among the crew’.

Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) said that a foreign national had been arrested ‘for the crime of disobeying the legitimate order of the Commander of an aircraft’.

Police also said officers had been forced to use ‘an electric weapon of low lethal potential’ to ‘guarantee the safety of the other passengers and crew’ after the man refused to cooperate.

‘The citizen ended up being detained by the police present there for the crime of disobedience, following the normal procedural steps, and the flight continued to its destination’, they added. 

A Jet2 spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We can confirm that flight LS727 from Edinburgh to Tenerife diverted to Porto Santo on Monday 17th July so that police could offload a disruptive passenger. 

‘As a result of this diversion, the Tenerife to Edinburgh flight was subsequently delayed, however our teams did everything to look after customers including providing hotel accommodation and refreshments.’

Earlier this month, a British tourist who was returning from his holiday in Turkey with his wife and teenage daughter had to restrain a ‘drunk’ passenger for an hour after he threatened to open the plane door. 

The Jet2 flight, which was bound for Glasgow and packed with holidaymakers travelling home from Bodrum, was forced to make an emergency landing in Bulgaria to remove the ‘disruptive’ passenger.

A month prior, another Jet2 passenger was dragged off a plane by police after allegedly ‘urinating on his brother’ and engaging in a ‘full fist fight’. 

Alfie and Kenneth Springthorpe were issued with a £50,000 fine by the airline following the incident on the London Stansted Airport to Crete flight last month (3 May).

A shocked passenger, who wishes to remain anonymous, captured a video showing one of the brothers being carted down the aisle by a Greek police officer.
