US embassy in London on lockdown after 'suspicious' package found outside as workers told to 'stay away from windows' | The Sun

THE US embassy in London was placed on "lockdown" after a "suspicious" package was found outside with workers told to move far away from the windows.

A number of people inside the building posted on social media claiming that an alarm had gone off due to an "ongoing situation".

Photos shared online show people crouching on the floor and sitting back against the walls.

While one witness, who lives close to the embassy reported how there are armed police and sniffer dogs patrolling the area.

Armed police carrying automatic assault rifles were seen inside talking with security guards.

Reports on social media said that there were lots of "armed police shouting" during the security incident.

But the Met Police confirmed that the incident was a "false alarm" with officers now "stood down" just after 11am.

The US Embassy also confirmed that everything is "back to normal" and explained that the threat was caused by a "suspicious package".

Their tweet read: "The US Embassy is back to normal business operations. 

"Local authorities investigated and cleared a suspicious package outside the Embassy.

One user tweeted: "Something is happening at the US Embassy London.

"I am inside, They told us to move away from the windows. Ongoing situation outside."

Others outside the building have tweeted how they were also ordered to move "far away from the building" due to the security alert.
