The WA police officer critically injured while on holiday in Croatia has arrived safely back in Perth after her fellow officers and the wider community raised over $500,000 to get her here.

Ella Cutler, 26, was rushed to hospital on August 26 after slipping and falling 10 metres from a wall between two restaurants, leaving her with multiple fractures to her skull, spine and ribs, and punctured lungs.

The Mirrabooka detective constable was with a 34-year-old Australian man, who also fell. Local media reported the two did not climb the wall, but fell when Cutler leaned on the man. He was taken to hospital and underwent surgery.

While Cutler had travel insurance, it’s believed they did not honour her policy because she had been consuming alcohol at the time of the fall.

Instead, her family launched a GoFundMe campaign which clocked up thousands of donations and hit their target in just six days. It meant Cutler could return to her family in Perth where she is now being cared for at Royal Perth Hospital.

“Ella is home safe and currently receiving treatment at RPH with family by her side,” her family said in a statement on Saturday.

“She’s stable and not in ICU which is a great sign, but it may be a week or more before we are able to provide a medical update, so we are asking for patience and privacy while we focus on Ella and she focuses on getting well.

“Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts to the blue family and everyone who supported Ella and made this possible.”

The family has also revealed that any donations received that surpassed what Cutler needed for medical costs and repatriation, would be donated to charity.

“Know that every percentage over the target amount is a percentage of every donation that will be paid forward as a way of thanks,” her brother Josh said.

“We have some charities in mind, however we hope that in the not so distant future Ella might nominate some herself. She hasn’t had a say in any of this and we thought this might be an opportunity for her to say thank you.”
