BUILDING noises can be a huge headache, especially if it early in the morning.

Here are the times when builders can get started with their work in the UK.

What time can builders start work in the UK?

The power to allow noisy work to take place rests with the local authority, under the Control of Pollution Act 1974.

Times when noisy work is not permitted does vary, but there are some standard hours which are generally seen as acceptable:

  • Monday to Friday: 8am to 6pm
  • Saturday: 8am to 1pm
  • Sunday or Bank Holiday: No noisy work

The hours though are just general guidelines and it is best to check with your local council for exact times as they can vary.

How can you complain about noise?

In the first place just go and speak to the builders, most will probably see no problem and take your wishes into account.

Outside of the hours described above you have the right to complain to the local council.

This though may take some time as they will probably come out to investigate before taking action against any persistent offenders.

What is the Considerate Constructors Scheme?

The Considerate Constructors Scheme is a not-for-profit, independent organisation founded to raise standards in the construction industry.

It is concerned about any area of construction activity that may have a direct or indirect impact on the image of the industry as a whole.

It works by monitoring registered sites, companies and suppliers by displaying of posters around the construction site, promoting registration with the Scheme.

If passers-by wish to comment, the name and telephone number of the site manager or company contact is clearly displayed, alongside the freephone telephone number of the Scheme’s administration office.
