Who is and who isn’t a prince or princess in the British Royal Family? | The Sun

KING Charles becoming the reigning monarch has changed the positions of the rest of the Royal Family.

The Windsor family has and historic heritage and royalty, but the line of succession in the family remains confusing.

Who is a prince or princess in the Royal Family?

All of Queen Elizabeth II's four children have titles.

The moment she passed away on September 8, 2022, her eldest son became King Charles III, the first Charles to sit on the throne since 1685.

Her other children are Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.

Prince William is the oldest son of King Charles III and Princess Diana and the first in line to the throne.

Children of the future king Prince William – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis also have the royal titles.

And as Prince George is the firstborn, he is in line to take the throne, after his father.

Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie, and Princess Beatrice also have titles as they are the Queen's grandchildren – although not all her grandkids chose to have titles.

Why does Archie not have a title?

Royal guidelines state that great-grandchildren of the monarch are not princes or princesses, so under Queen Elizabeth II, Archie and Lilibet didn't have a title.

As Prince Harry is not the next future king of England, Archie and Lilibet were ranked at the same level of status within the family as the children of Princess Eugenie, Zara Tindall, and Peter Phillips.

Originally it was only going to be Prince George who was to be given the title of Prince, as he has a direct line of succession to the throne.

But before George was born, Queen Elizabeth II stepped in and issued a Letters Patent to ensure all Kate and William's children would have fitting titles.

Had she not done that, Princess Charlotte would have been a Lady and Prince Louis a Lord.

Why do Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips not have titles?

Zara and Peter are the eldest of Queen Elizabeth II's grandchildren and the children of Princess Anne's ex-husband Mark Phillips.

They don't participate in royal duties or have official status as HRH.

That's because tradition states that only those with a father in the line of succession can possess the title.

On top of that, Princess Anne turned down the Queen's offer of a title for her children.

Why do Prince Edward's children not have titles?

The Queen decided, with the consent of Prince Edward and his wife Sophie Rhys-Jones, that their children would be given the titles of Lady and Viscount.

This makes Prince Edward’s children – Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn – The Queen’s first male-line descendants not to have royal titles.

Will Archie ever have a royal title?

As grandchildren of King Charles III, Archie and Lilibet will be able to call themselves prince and princess titles.

They are not expected to have HRH status as they are not working royals.

That's because of rules set out by George V when he issued a Letters Patent in 1917.

It read: "…the grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of dukes of these our realms."

Meghan and Harry will be able to choose whether or not they have the title or not.

The couple had previously suggested to Oprah Winfrey that Archie might be blocked from being a prince.
