Lori Lightfoot's wife Amy Eshleman is a local community leader and philanthropist from Sterling, Illinois.

In 1984, she graduated from Miami University with a degree in history.

From 1984 to 1988, Eshleman worked in the US House of Representatives.

Following her stint with Congress, Eshleman moved back to Chicago.

From 1994 to 2012, she worked as the Assistant Commissioner for the city's public library.

When did Lightfoot marry Eshleman?

On May 31, 2014, Lightfoot and Eshleman tied the knot on the same day same-sex marriage was made legal in Illinois.

Regarding her marriage to the future mayor, the latter told The Chicago Tribune: "To be able to be married on that day felt really big.

"You want certain things for yourself, and falling in love and having a family and doing all those things felt really important to us."

The couple shares one daughter named Vivian, who they adopted sometime after they walked down the aisle.

How did they meet?

Lori and Amy first crossed paths when the latter's co-worker Mary Dempsey was tasked to work with Lori in then-Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley's administration.

Mary and Amy both worked at the Chicago Public Library, the former was the center's head commissioner.

Through Lori and Mary's work with former mayor Daley, Lori eventually met Amy.

She eventually took office on May 20, 2019, which made her and Amy the mayor and first lady of Chicago.
