But will the 21st Century see the world go to war again? Here's what we know.

Will there be World War 3?

As tensions between Russia and the West continue to rise, many fear the crisis in Ukraine could develop into a wider armed conflict.

Russian president Vladimir Putin began attacking Ukraine in the early hours of February 24, 2022.

Officials have warned that escalation of the crisis may see the bloodiest conflict in Europe since WW2, leading to thousands of civilian deaths and sparking a significant refugee crisis in Europe.

The exact death toll is unknown, though estimates say that uin June 2022 Russia has lost almost 50,000 fighters.

As Putin’s health deteriorates, there are fears that he could turn to nuclear weapons out of desperation. 

The use of nuclear weapons would change how Ukraine’s allies view the situation.

As Ukraine is not a member of Nato the UK, US and allies are aiding the nation without declaring war on Russia.

However if Russia attacks Nato allies then action would be expected.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned that "World War 3" could erupt if Russia continues to escalate its attack.

There are fears the conflict could worsen the global food crisis, despite both sides signing a deal to resume grain exports.

Away from the Ukraine conflict, international analysts are also wary of multiple hotspots where China might want to take military action over the next few years.

Officials also warned not to underestimate the situation in Iran.

Israeli officials have warned the West must do all it can to prevent Iran from gaining access to nuclear weapons.

What are the current global conflicts?

Here’s what you need to know about some of the biggest ongoing global conflicts. 

Russia-Ukraine

On February 24, 2022, Vladimir Putin launched a series of missile attacks against locations near Kyiv and in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, near the Russian border.

Nearly ten million people have fled Ukraine since the conflict started – causing the largest refugee crisis since the Second World War.

It was a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian war that started in 2014, when Russia invaded Crimea.

The conflict marks the first major war in Europe for decades. 

China-Taiwan

Taiwan is said to be “preparing for war” after officials in Beijing warned that there could be military consequences if the West intervenes in the row over disputed territory.

China threatened to impose a no fly zone if US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits.
