Woman flees Albert Park Lake sexual assault, seeks help from passers-by

A woman who fled a sexual assault at a popular park in Melbourne’s south was chased by her alleged attacker and had to seek assistance from passers-by, police said.

A 42-year-old man, who was on bail at the time, was arrested after the incident at Albert Park Lake about 11.15pm on Friday.

It is alleged the man, who was unknown to the woman, approached her as she was sitting on the embankment of the lake.

Officers allege the Prahran man then sexually and physically assaulted the woman.

“The woman was able to run from the man, who allegedly chased after her, before she sought assistance from passers-by,” police said in a statement.

“St Kilda divisional van members responded quickly and arrested the Prahran man nearby.”

The man has been charged with sexual assault, sexual assault by compelling sexual touching, assault with intent to commit a sexual assault, common law assault, and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail.

He was remanded overnight and will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.
