A woman was terrorised and forced out of her home after a group of "extremely strong rats" made a home for themselves in her attic and dragged steel chains across the floor.

The University of Leeds students say they had to put up with months of constant creepy tapping sounds caused by the supposedly 'immortal' rats.

Livi Roberts, who ultimately left the infested house, said the ordeal was like "the start of [Pixar film] Ratatouille".

She told LeedsLive: "So basically I first noticed it maybe two months after we moved in.

"I kept hearing this tapping kind of sound. I didn't get it sorted at first because I honestly thought it was just the shower dripping or something, but it kept happening more and more until I realised it was definitely tapping multiple times a day."

Livi contacted her landlords who arranged for a pest control unit to visit the Belle Vue Road house, who at first didn't believe the final-year student – until they went to the attic and discovered rat droppings everywhere.

The exterminators set out poison, reassuring Livi that while at first she would likely experience more disturbance, the rats would eventually die.

But the "immortal" rats didn't die, despite eating the poison, and the nightmare continued.

Livi continued: "Sure enough the rats are going crazy. I can hear them all running around constantly.

"It doesn't stop though. The exterminators see a bunch of poison has been eaten though. Basically rinse and repeat over and over.

"At some point we kind of just gave up, they were nowhere else anyway. Months of listening to them run around 24/7 was driving me insane though."

But Livi said the worst part of the whole nightmare was where the rats were staying – in the attic of their house, which resembled a 'torture chamber' complete with steel chains.

And the rats were so strong they were able to pull the chains across the floor.

"The fun/creepy part was the house's attic," Livi said.

"Literally looked like some kind of torture room. Like, there was nothing in there apart from a bunch of chains wrapped around the supports.

"We heard the rats dragging that chain around a lot which was kind of unnerving. My flatmate had it worse honestly because their nest was above their bed."

Livi no longer lives in the rodent-infested house, but thinks the creepy creatures are probably still there.

"Admittedly we were kind of stressed with our dissertations and all the visits hadn't helped, so we kind of gave up. As far as I know they're still there," she added.

"I mean I heard them the day I moved out, so."
