Who said black and white pics were flattering! Woman is left ‘looking like Rose West’ thanks to unflattering snap on her Costco membership card

A youth education boss has warned against getting black and white ID photos – after realising she ‘looks like Rose West’ on her Costco membership card.

Adele Prendergast was stunned to see the likeness of the notorious serial killer staring back at her when a staff member passed over her card featuring a headshot taken seconds earlier.

The black and white image shows the 37-year-old in thick-rimmed glasses and messy hair sporting a ‘smirk’ – that she admits looks just like a police mugshot of West.

Mother-of-two Adele says she told the staff member ‘you’ve made me look like Rose West’ but claims the ‘serious’ employee simply said ‘tough, there’s nothing I can do’.

She’s since revealed she spent a year wondering if she actually looked like the murderer every time she handed the 12-month membership card in to gain entry to the store.

The crimes of Rose and Fred West

The Wests, who lived at their Gloucester home from 1972 until their arrests in 1994, regularly took on lodgers in the property, which was also home to ten of their children.

To supplement their income, Rose would solicit to both men and women in one of the upstairs bedrooms, while Fred would watch through peep holes. 

Rose was convicted of 10 murders and is one of just three female prisoners serving a whole life tariff.

Her husband, Fred, confessed the killings in 1994 and committed suicide while on remand at HMP Birmingham a year later. 

The victims include Heather West (their daughter), 16, Alison Chambers, 16, Shirley Robinson, 18, Juanita Mott, 18, Shirley Hubbard, 15, Theresa Siegnethaler, 21, Lucy Partington, 21, Carol Ann Cooper, 15, Lynda Gough, 19, Rena Costello (Fred’s ex-wife), 27, Charmaine West (Fred’s daughter), 8, and Anne McFall, 18.

Fred is believed to have also killed 15-year-old Mary Bastholm, although her remains have never been found. 

The founder of a financial education firm posted a TikTok video a fortnight ago revealing the unfortunate image.

Now she’s urging anyone getting ID photos or membership cards to watch out for black and white images and to ‘get dolled up’ to avoid her embarrassment.

Adele, from Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland, said: ‘Anyone that knows Rose West knows the exact picture I’m talking about. Where she looks straight at the camera.

‘I think it’s because of my glasses when you see them in black and white. I just look deadpan and there’s nothing behind my eyes. We both have the same smirk too.

‘I said to [the worker] ‘you’ve made me look like Rose West and she just said ‘there’s nothing I can do about it’. I asked if I could retake and she said ‘no’. She was so serious and just said ‘tough’.

‘Luckily I’m not a vain person at all and I just thought it was really funny that that’s who I looked like. It doesn’t get any worse. You wouldn’t want people to think you look like her.

‘For our job we need full safety disclosures to be around children and here I am looking like old Rosie.

‘I laughed every time I handed it in for the staff to check it was me. I was questioning if I actually look like her. I couldn’t wait to cut it up after a year.

‘Passport photos, this and anything where you have to look straight at a camera aren’t pretty and you’re not getting dolled up to go to Costco.

‘I’d tell people to get their passports in colour and get their eyelashes done and their hair all nice with a bouncy blow dry to make sure they look nice in it. I’ve learned my lesson.’

Despite Adele wishing she’d have been able to take another shot, she says she understands Costco can’t ‘promote vanity’ by giving people the chance to retake shots multiple times.

Her Facebook post captioned ‘big shout out to Costco for managing to make me look like Rose West’ has attracted more than 100 reactions and almost 50 comments.

Rose West collaborated with husband Fred West in the murder and torture of multiple women in the 1970s and 1980s and is still in prison.

Adele says she’s pleased she doesn’t look like West on her most recent Costco card as she has longer hair now.

Costco’s policy on them taking more than one image for membership cards is unclear although it’s believed some staff members allow it.

Costco declined to comment.
