Men under 40 have been warned that drinking more than a small shot of beer at the pub per day could be detrimental to their health, a shock new study reveals.

According to the research, women aged 39 and under should drink no more than two tablespoons' worth of wine, or just 100ml of beer.

People aged over 40 can have larger quantities of alcohol because it can help ward off ailments like heart disease, strokes and diabetes when you pass that landmark birthday.

Experts recommended that the weekly alcohol consumption should be spread across three days or more.

Despite binge drinking being more common in younger generations, boffins said that young people face higher risks by getting sloshed than their older counterparts.

The study, published in The Lancet, discovered that almost 60% of those who drank harmful amounts of booze were people aged 15 to 39.

People in that age group were warned that alcohol provides no health benefits for them and increases the risk of drinking-related injuries, car accidents, suicides or murders.

Senior author Dr Emmanuela Gakidou, professor of health metrics sciences at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine, said: "Our message is simple: young people should not drink, but older people may benefit from drinking small amounts.

"While it may not be realistic to think young adults with abstain from drinking, we do think it's important to communicate the latest evidence so that everyone can make informed decisions about their health."

Dark chocolate and red wine are considered useful in warding off cancer, in small quantities.

Luckily for blokes over the age of 65, they can down four drinks before they start risking a loss to health.

A separate study conducted in 2020 found that 1.34 billion people around the world drank harmful amounts of alcohol that year.
