Amy Dowden shares wish to return to Strictly Come Dancing as she battles cancer

Amy Dowden on reuniting with Strictly co-stars

Amy Dowden has admitted she’s desperate to return to the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom in some way this year, even though her cancer treatment means she can’t be one of the main professional dancers.

The 33-year-old revealed that the Strictly team have “some fabulous wigs” lined up for her to help her feel as glamorous as possible amid her chemotherapy-induced hair loss.

“We’ve got some dates in the diary, but it will depend on how I feel. We’re taking it a step at a time!” Amy, who previously competed with EastEnders actor James Bye in 2022 and McFly singer Tom Fletcher in 2021, explained.

Amy is as yet unsure whether she’ll be joining the cast on one of the Saturday night shows, appearing on Strictly spinoff It Takes Two, or merely appearing in a promotional video clip.

However, one thing is certain – she can’t wait to shimmy her way back to the dancefloor as soon as her health allows.

“The pros have been sending videos, flowers and presents. I speak to [fellow dancing pro] Dianne [Buswell] every single day,” the emotional star told Hello! magazine.

She added: “I’m grateful they are including me because Strictly will help me get through the next few months, mentally. It’s just the tonic that I need.”

Amy’s prognosis is good, but despite having high hopes of beating cancer following a full mastectomy and chemo sessions, it’s been an arduous journey.

Just two days after her first chemo session earlier this month, while struggling with a weakened immune system, the star became seriously ill with a bout of sepsis which could have cost her life.

She revealed that her temperature rapidly rose to 37.7 Celsius, but that she hadn’t initially understood how much danger she was in, dismissing her symptoms as a reaction to the treatment.

“At the time, I didn’t realise that having a temperature of 37.5 or above could be fatal for a chemo patient,” she explained.

As time passed, she became breathless and started to complain of a pain in her chest, sparking alarm and forcing her panicked mum to call an ambulance.

The star has since stated that she didn’t have enough white blood cells to fight infection due to the impact of the chemo, causing an infection to become sepsis.

Meanwhile, on Instagram previously, Amy offered a harrowing account of what her first chemo session felt like.

“I hardly slept [and] broke down in tears as soon as I got in the room [at hospital].

“Like my lovely nurse has said, I just need to think of the end goal,” she added.

She has since made a full recovery from sepsis, and has vowed to become strong enough to return to the job she loves, exclaiming, “You can take away my boob, but you can’t take dancing away from me!”
