Anton Du Beke, 56, and his wife Hannah Summers, 46, have been married since 2017 but much like the judge she refuses to hold her tongue when he asks for genuine insights on the show. In fact, Hannah has seldom held back on her criticisms of Anton, as their very first meeting went terribly wrong.

Speaking to Gaby Roslin on her podcast, Anton explained why his judging critiques on Strictly Come Dancing may seem more technical or lengthy than the other judges.

He said: “I’ve got enough information backlogged in the back of my head enough experience to know with a simple ‘that’s good’ or ‘that’s bad’.”

However, Hannah has some different opinions, and when he asked his wife of five years how he sounded on the show, she simply replied: “Not great, it’s too long. You’re better when you’re short.”

The astounded star added: “Can you imagine? You want me to talk less?”

“Yes please!” his auspicious wife replied.

The moment had Gaby in fits of giggles as she proclaimed her love for Hannah’s straight-talking.

Anton went on to describe how Hannah had shown off these traits in their very first meeting as he awkwardly followed her to the bathroom.

The pair were at a big golf day for charity, followed by a black-tie dinner, which Hannah was attending as another man’s guest.

They were seated at a big round table across from each other, meaning Anton could not easily spark a conversation with her.

Luckily, the man she was attending with was seated right next to the former Strictly pro and Anton began grilling him on his plus one.

The man revealed she was simply a friend, which immediately sparked Anton’s mind as he recalled: “Oh a friend? The game’s afoot!”

Later in the evening, Hannah quietly stood up and left the table and eager to start a conversation Anton followed suit.

Walking a swift three paces behind Hannah, he didn’t realise until it was too late that she was going into the ladies’ room.

He tactfully dipped into the men’s room but faced a conundrum when he came out.

Anton recalled: “I come out of the men’s and go ‘Oh, she might’ve gone back to the table. I might’ve missed my chance, do I wait here?

“She might still be in there. Do I ask somebody to check? I can’t do that, that’s ridiculous.

“As I’m mulling this stuff over she comes out of the loo and she stops looks at me and goes: ‘Have you been waiting for me outside the toilet?’

“I went: ‘Might have been’, and she went: ‘Weirdo’ and walked off!”

Although their first encounter had “gone really badly” according to the ballroom legend, he managed to find her later in the night and started an actual conversation, “and the rest is history”.

Strictly Come Dancing airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
