Ashley Graham says Hugh Grant ‘didn’t want to be there’ as she talks viral chat

Oscars 2023: Awkward moment Hugh Grant rolls eyes in ABC interview

Model Ashley Graham has opened up about her excruciating champagne carpet interview with Four Weddings and a Funeral star Hugh Grant at the 2023 Academy Awards, which went viral for all the wrong reasons.

The 35-year-old was working the VIP carpet for ABC television and Hugh, 62, was one of the many celebrities she approached for a chat.

“I could tell he didn’t want to be there, that was obvious. Before, we were chatting, he was very pleasant,” she recalled.

“Then we started rolling and he was like, ‘I don’t want to be here’, and I was, ‘OK, work with me! I get it! But like, work with me?’

“I was trying my hardest to be my nice, upbeat self and he gave me what he had,” she recalled.

Amongst the many awkward moments, during their brief encounter, Hugh declared of the Oscars: “The whole of humanity is here. It’s vanity fair.”

The English actor was referring to the 1848 William Thackeray novel about the frivolity of shallow, upper-crust society.

However, Ashley misinterpreted the comment and thought he was referring to the show’s famous afterparty, and her response, “Oh, it’s all about Vanity Fair. That’s where we let loose…” left Hugh looking on bemused. Ironically though he attended the Vanity Fair party after the ceremony.

“I didn’t get the Vanity Fair comment,” she admitted in an interview with The Sunday Times. “My public school system didn’t have that book, probably. It’s crazy how viral it went.”

During the cringeworthy chat, she asked the actor, who is soon to be seen in the Charlie And the Chocolate Factory prequel Wonka, who he was looking forward to seeing scoop an Academy Award, with Hugh commenting “no one in particular”.

Ashley then followed up with: “Who are you wearing tonight?” to which Hugh continued to keep his answers brief replying: “My suit.”

She also asked him questions about his cameo role in Glass Onion which saw him cameo as the boyfriend of Daniel Craig’s erstwhile detective Benoit Blanc.

When she enquired what it was like to be in a movie like that, which was the hugely anticipated sequel to the blockbuster Knives Out, Hugh glossed over it.

“Well I’m barely in it, I was in it for about three seconds,” he quipped.

The encounter divided people with Piers Mogan slamming Hugh’s “pathetically juvenile antics” however, Jeremy Clarkson declared that Ashley had asked a “dumb question”.
