Bob Mortimer, 63, has spoken about his experience getting married to his wife Lisa Matthews. In an unearthed interview, the comedian told how he married his now-wife minutes before undergoing a triple heart bypass surgery. It comes as Bob is set to star on Gone Fishing on Friday 9th September on BBC iPlayer.

The star revealed he was so ill at the time, 22 years ago, that he was consequently given special permission to marry a mere 30 minutes before the surgery took place.

Bob, 63, was told last year that his arteries were nearly fully blocked up.

He spoke in an unearthed interview from 2016 about how he was given permission by a London registrar to be married earlier than planned.

Bob said: “I found out on the Thursday that I needed surgery, so I made a will on the Friday.

“I found out I couldn’t get married to Lisa because you have to give 21 days’ notice or something.

“My consultant said I was incredibly ill, so the registrar in London gave me permission to get married on the Monday.

“So I got married at 9.30am on the Monday, and went to hospital at 10am to have my operation,” he told Teeside Live.

The Would I Lie to You regular ultimately ended up having a small wedding when the ceremony took place in 2015.

There were only two people present at the wedding, and they were the couple’s two children Harry and Tom.

The star’s comic second half of the Vic and Bob duo, Vic Reeves, was unfortunately not present at the time to be his best man.

In more recent times, the comedian has put himself at risk of severe illness.

As seen in the latest episode of Gone Fishing alongside co-star Paul Whitehouse, he learned he was at risk of over 20 types of cancer.

The pair had their waists measured in the episode and were shocked by the results.

Bob explained his weight has contributed to him being more at risk of cancer and vowed to take action.

He said: “We looked into it because we wondered a little bit.

“But it was true 22 cancers come onto the table if, as a fella, your waist is over 102cm, and it’s less if you’re Asian, 96 If you’re Asian.”

He learned his waist was measured at 104cm, and in a clip from the show he vowed: “I am going to make it my mission to get under 102!”

Ahead of the new season, Bob spoke about how being heart healthy was an important theme of the show.

“We struggle with it a bit during the series, because we do like to treat ourselves,” he explained.

“We’re the sorts of people that on a holiday you can eat what you want – and it does seem like a little holiday these trips.”
