Brit Awards slammed as no women are nominated for Best British Artist accolade

Music fans are in uproar after The Brit Awards failed to include female musicians on their shortlist for the Best Artist accolade.

The Brit Awards traditionally had Best Female and Best Male categories but these were scrapped ahead of the 2021 awards, with the all-new "gender neutral" Best Artist Prize being launched and subsequently won by Adele.

Less than a year later though, female and non-binary musicians have been excluded from the category's nominations list.

Instead, Harry Styles, Stormzy, George Ezra, Fred again.. and Central Cee will compete for the title at the star-studded ceremony in London next month.

The all-male shortlist has failed to impress fans on social media, with many taking to Twitter to vent their frustration.

Among them was music journalist and former DJ Sue Charles, who blasted the nomination announcement on Thursday. She wrote: “Wot, no women nominated for Best British Artist at the #Brits?”

Sue even offered her own worthy suggestions for the shortlist, writing: “An all-male shortlist in a gender neutral category? Amazed Little Simz, Dua Lipa and Self Esteem are overlooked for the big one.

“Shame to see talented women missing out on such a showcase.”

Others dubbed the lack of nominations as “disgraceful” and "misogyny in broad daylight".

In a scathing tweet, the Green Party Feminists account wrote: "See what happens when you go 'gender-neutral'? Women disappear. Not so kind or inclusive after all @BRITs…"

Another fan wrote: So in the space of 2 years, combining the @BRITs best male & best female categories into ‘artist of the year’ has resulted in no female solo artists being nominated, thereby excluding at least 5 women who would normally have got a chance in the spotlight. Not exactly a success."

Little Simz won Best New Artist at the 2022 Brit Awards and took home the highly-coveted Mercury Music Prize in 2022 – yet has no nominations at the 2023 Brits.

Singer-songwriter Self Esteem, real name Rebecca Taylor, also had a phenomenal 2022 after releasing her hit album Prioritise Pleasure in October the year before.

The star headed off on an extensive tour, which included a triumphant Glastonbury set, and she even composed the music for Prima Facie, the award-winning one woman West End show starring Jodie Come.

Another female artist who has been overlooked is Florence and The Machine.

In 2022, Florence Welch topped the charts with her latest album, Dance Fever, and won huge praise from critics before heading off on a huge tour that was devastatingly cut short when she broke her foot on stage.
