Britney Spears reveals that method acting in her 2002 movie Crossroads was disorienting: ‘After a while you don’t know what’s real anymore’

Britney Spears revealed that method acting in the 2002 film Crossroads was disorienting and that she didn’t know how to ‘break out of character.’

In her upcoming memoir, The Woman in Me, the singer, 41 — who recently revealed she underwent an abortion with ex Justin Timberlake at the age of 19 — shares how she didn’t have ‘any separation at all’ from her character.

‘The experience wasn’t easy for me. My problem wasn’t with anyone involved in the production but with what acting did to my mind,’ she wrote in the excerpt, shared with People.

‘I think I started Method acting — only I didn’t know how to break out of my character. I really became this other person.’

‘Living that way, being half yourself and half a fictional character, is messed up. After a while you don’t know what’s real anymore.’

In character: ‘I didn’t know how to break out of my character. I really became this other person,’ she wrote in her memoir, The Woman in Me, as per excerpt shared via People

‘Some people do Method acting, but they’re usually aware of the fact that they’re doing it. But I didn’t have any separation at all,’ the Toxic hitmaker shared.

Spears writes in the book that she ended up ‘walking differently, carrying myself differently, talking differently. ‘

‘I was someone else for months while I filmed Crossroads. Still to this day, I bet the girls I shot that movie with think, She’s a little…quirky. If they thought that, they were right.’

After filming was over, the singer decided that an acting career was not in the cards for her, stating she was ‘relieved.’

‘I imagine there are people in the acting field who have dealt with something like that, where they had trouble separating themselves from a character,’ she added.

The film is returning to the big screen for two nights, on October 23 and 25, in parallel to the release of the memoir on October 24.

The film follows best friends Lucy (Spears), Mimi (Zoe Saldaña) and Kitt (Taryn Manning) on a road trip across the United States.

It was directed by Tamra Davis and written by Shonda Rhimes.

Her story: The memoir comes almost two years after the star was released from her court-ordered conservatorship after 13 years

The memoir comes almost two years after the star was released from her court-ordered conservatorship after 13 years.

Her father, Jamie Spears, was initially a co-conservator after the arrangement started in 2008, with the attorney Andrew Wallet serving alongside him until 2019.

In another excerpt, which was obtained by People, Britney wrote about how she felt ‘infantilized’ by the conservatorship and the loss of independence that came with it.

‘I became a robot. But not just a robot — a sort of child-robot. I had been so infantilized that I was losing pieces of what made me feel like myself,’ she wrote.

The singer also wrote that the conservatorship sapped her of much of her creative talent as well.

‘The conservatorship stripped me of my womanhood, made me into a child. I became more of an entity than a person onstage,’ she continued. ‘I had always felt music in my bones and my blood; they stole that from me.’

In another part of the book, Spears revealed she got pregnant by Justin Timberlake in 2000, with the singer undergoing an abortion because the N*Sync star ‘didn’t want to be a father.’

Spears who dated Timberlake, 42, from 1999-2002, details the ‘agonizing’ decision to terminate the pregnancy – after conceiving in late 2000 when the pair were both 19, DailyMail.com can confirm.

Her fans are also speculating that her song Everytime details the events from that time.

The star claimed while she wanted the baby and ‘dreamed of having a family’ with Timberlake, he ‘wasn’t ready’ for the responsibilities of parenthood and thought the pair were too young.

She writes in an excerpt obtained by People: ‘It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated.

‘He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young. I’m sure people will hate me for this, but I agreed not to have the baby.

‘I don’t know if that was the right decision. If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.’

The star said the abortion was ‘one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life’ in the memoir.

Spears would later welcome sons Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden, 17 with Kevin Federline while Timberlake shares sons Silas, eight, and Phineas, two, with wife Jessica Biel.
