Cher reflects on the loss of her 'amazing, kick-ass' mother

Cher reflects on the loss of her ‘amazing, kick-ass’ mother but admits they sometimes had a ‘rocky’ relationship: ‘We were two really strong women!’

Cher has reflected on the loss of her ‘amazing, kick-ass’ mother in a candid new interview.

The Believe hitmaker, 77, spoke with Rylan Clark in a special BBC show Cher Meets Rylan that will air on Saturday as she spoke about her family while promoting her new Christmas album.

Cher’s mother Georgia Holt died at the age of 96 last December. She was a singer-songwriter, actress and model.

Cher has now spoken fondly of her mother – as well as admitting they often had a ‘difficult’ relationship – saying she ‘wasn’t sad’ when she died as she was in so much pain.

During the chat Rylan said: ‘I am so sorry because your mum did sadly pass. I know that hit you quite hard.’

Cher replied: ‘I wasn’t sad because she wouldn’t have wanted to be the way she was. I know that because I obviously knew her so well.

‘Sometimes I go ‘oh I got to call mum’. It’s so weird like you go ‘oh I have to…I should ask mum’ but it’s like I’m not sad in any kind of way because I’m so happy that she can be herself again.

‘You know my mum was just an amazing, kick-ass woman, funny and talented. She just was hysterical. I’ll tell you. This is kind of my mum. I came home one day, my mum was on the roof and I said ‘mum, what are you doing?’.

‘She said ‘well we lost some shingles’. She had nails in one hand and a hammer in the other and said she was fixing them.’

Rylan then spoke about his mum Linda as he joked: ‘This sounds very familiar to someone I know. My mum. I came home one day Cher and she was on my roof, getting leaves out of the gutter. She’s 71!’

Laughing Cher replied back to him: ‘Well look, they’re a pair!’

Rylan then asked her in relation to her new music: ‘Doing that album though must have brought back some really fond memories for you as well, when it came down to your mum?’

To which the songstress replied: ‘Well you know, because my mum sang. My grandfather sang and played guitar. My uncle sang. So I didn’t think everyone sang I just kind of thought everyone sang.

‘Mom is gone,’ penned Cher, followed by a frowning emoji, as she announced the death last year

Back in early September of last year, Cher revealed in a Twitter post that her mother had been hospitalized with pneumonia and had been suffering from recurring health issues

She then reflected on what her mother taught her and the lessons she received while growing up.

Cher said: ‘My mum told me a couple of things. First of all my mum had a five year rule. If it doesn’t matter in five years, it doesn’t matter. And then you know, I’m dyslexic, so when I was in school, I did badly.

‘My worst subject was math and I got a really bad grade and I came home and I was like ‘mum, I’m just so upset’ and I thought she was going to be angry. And I said ‘what am I going to do mum I can’t see these numbers’. And she said ‘baby don’t worry, when you get older you’ll have someone to do numbers for you’. I was like ‘ok mum’.

Rylan replied: ‘I mean she wasn’t lying was she? Let’s be honest. She seemed like she instilled some good values in you. 100%.’

Cher then reflected on one of the quotes she is most famous for – when she told her mother that she was in fact a ‘rich man’ and didn’t need to find one to look after her.

The star explained: ‘Except the one thing that she did say to me one time. It showed how kind of old fashioned she was.

‘I wanted to make this movie but I didn’t have the money and I was thinking ‘I’ve got to get the financing’ and so then my mum said ‘honey why don’t you marry a rich man?’ and I went ‘mum, I am a rich man’ so it was like the one time that she kind of missed it.

Rylan then touched on their sometimes hard relationship, asking: ‘You had a beautiful relationship with your mother but the relationship was rocky at times wasn’t it?’

She replied: ‘Oh yes. I mean we were very different. I mean we were the same in some ways but we were very different in other ways.

‘And we were two really strong women. When I got to be more grown up, we had arguments. We had some difficult times.’

Back in early September of last year, Cher revealed in a Twitter post that Georgia had been hospitalized with pneumonia and had been suffering from recurring health issues.

‘Sorry I’ve Been Mia. Mom’s Been Sick Off & On. She Just Got Out Of Hosp. She Had Pneumonia,’ wrote the star, who followed up with: ‘She’s Getting Better’

The following day, Cher returned to the platform to thank her fans for their prayers.

Cher paid tribute to her mother back in 2013 with a documentary aired on Lifetime called Dear Mom, Love Cher.

The film, which Cher executive-produced, detailed Holt’s childhood in Arkansas, her six marriages, and her singing and acting career in Los Angeles as she struggled to support her daughter.

Georgia was a lifelong support to her daughter through her stratospheric rise to stardom – as well as her turbulent love life.

Cher’s romantic history included failed marriages to Sonny Bono – whom she shot to fame with before they fell out in a bitter divorce where she accused him of pressing her into ‘involuntary servitude’ – and Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers.

Rylan then touched on their sometimes hard relationship, asking: ‘You had a beautiful relationship with your mother but the relationship was rocky at times wasn’t it?’

She replied: ‘Oh yes. I mean we were very different. I mean we were the same in some ways but we were very different in other ways’ (seen in 2013)

Just like her mother, Cher left home at 17 – though Cher did so in order to secretly move in with Sonny, who was 12 years her senior.

Years later Georgia recalled with a laugh that ‘I didn’t know that that’s why she left home. I thought she was living with a stewardess.’

When Cher and her mother went on the Tonight Show together, they confessed to Jay Leno that Georgia initially disapproved of Cher’s romance with Sonny.

Georgia was evidently put off by the age gap between the pair, as well as the fact that Sonny had been married and had a child.

Georgia herself had a tumultuous love life that included a whopping six marriages, a fact Cher attributes to the social mores of her generation.
