UK weather: Storm Babet latest as warnings in force

Dan Walker has been caught up in the flooding, caused by Storm Babet, in the Chesterfield area.

The presenter took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share a video of the chaos he had faced attempting to get to the Channel 5 studios ahead of his show on Friday.

In the clip, Dan, 46, filmed the road from the car he was travelling in, to show fans the extent of the floods.

Sharing details, he wrote: “Trains cancelled, trying to get to the @5_News studio by car but I’ve already seen 3 vehicles half-submerged in water and this is the main road through Chesterfield.”

Dan’s post prompted many of his 799,000 followers to wish him a safe journey.

One commented: “Hope you make it safely.”

A second wrote: “Please be careful – take care.”

“Be safe Dan. Don’t take any unnecessary risks,” a third added.

Another joked that his co-star Helen Skelton could come to the rescue.

Storm Babet has sparked floods and disruption across large parts of the UK, including Chesterfield and Derbyshire.

A rare red weather alert issued by the Met Office, warning of a “danger to life from fast flowing or deep floodwater”, has been extended until midnight on Saturday.

The storm has brought winds of up to 70mph and more than a metre of rain in some parts of the UK.

Two people in their 50s have sadly lost their lives due to the extreme weather conditions.

Dan’s troubled journey to work comes ahead of his latest delivery of the news on Channel 5.

He was the host of Football Focus from 2009 to 2021, as well as BBC Breakfast from 2016 until May 2022.

Last month, he and his Football Focus replacement Alex Scott clashed over his comment about the show’s viewing figures.

Alex seemingly took offence after he said it was “hard” to see the BBC show struggling.

At the time, he wrote: “It’s hard to see Football Focus struggling. I loved it growing up and it was an honour to present it and I still miss it. We poured everything into that show every week and worked hard to keep it relevant. I hope it stays part of the TV landscape.”

Alex responded to Dan’s post in GIF format, simply saying: “Interesting.”

He replied: “I’m not saying you haven’t Alex. It’s a saturated market and it’s hard work every week. I hope you have a good show today.”

Hitting back at critics, the presenter went on to write: “We have big interviews with Ange Postecoglou and Arsenal captain Martin Odegarard coming up on the ‘Award’ winning Football Focus tomorrow. Make that a headline.”
