Graham Norton says British reaction to Queen’s death is ‘not rational’

TV host and Eurovision commentator Graham Norton has said the reaction to the Queen's death is "not rational".

The late monarch whose funeral has taken place today, passed away on Thursday, September 8 at the age of 96. The funeral comes to mark the end of a 10 day period of national mourning which has included the Queen lying-in-state for four days inside Westminster Hall.

Thousands of mourners have queued for hours, often through the nights, in a line that stretched for miles to pay their respects. And in a recent interview, Graham, 59, reflected on the public's response to her passing.

He admits to having never met the Queen personally and told The Times: "It's gorgeous to see the way people respond. It's not rational. But it's genuine."

Graham was not one of the celebrities who attended the funeral today (September 19) though a number of famous TV personalities, including David Attenborough, Bear Grylls, Gary Barlow, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sandra Oh and Peep Show star Sophie Winkleman who were spotted inside Westminster Abbey.

In a ceremony befitting her historic 70 year reign on the throne, the Queen's funeral took place at Westminster Abbey, attended by up more than 2000 mourners and with tens of thousands of people lining the streets of central London to witness the historic and poignant event.

Following the service in London, the Queen’s coffin was transported to Windsor, where a private ceremony will take place before she is interred alongside her late husband the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Queen's great-grandchildren Princess Charlotte and Prince George walked behind their parents into the Abbey in touching scenes, while their uncle Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex walked behind.

Paying his respects to his grandmother, Prince William wrote in a tribute: "I thank her for the kindness she showed my family and me. And I thank her on behalf of my generation for providing an example of service and dignity in public life that was from a different age, but always relevant to us all."
