Will Mellor is set to put on his skating shoes as he's been confirmed as the first contestant to join the Strictly Come Dancing line-up.

Sharing his joy over being cast for the star-studded show, which is said to be returning in September, the Hollyoaks star said: "I'm honestly so chuffed to be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing this year!

"Not going to lie, it's totally out of my comfort zone and I know it will be a huge challenge but that's what life is all about."

Will added: "This is also my Mum's favourite show and she’s had a really tough few years so I’m doing this is for her as well. Bring it on!”

The official Instagram account for the BBC also shared the news on as they posted a photo of him with the caption: "Welcome Will Mellor! Our very first celebrity of #Strictly 2022!"

Professional dancer Dianne Buswell was first to comment on the announcement as she wrote: "It begins !!!!! Yay welcome will".

Her fellow dancer colleague Gorka Marquez posted: "Welcome to the family! @willmellor76".

John Whaite, who previously made history as first ever male-pairing with Johannes Radebe on the show, said: "Start stretching pal," with three clapping hands emojis.

While Jake Quickenden added: "Yes love @willmellor76 such a top bloke".
