ITV Benidorm stars announce engagement after falling in love thanks to show

Former ITV Benidorm star Laila Zaidi could scarcely conceal her delight as she flashed a glimpse of the engagement ring marking her commitment to Adam Gillen – the fellow actor she met on the show more than five years ago.

The acting couple, who played Liam and Cyd on Benidorm, have taken their relationship a step further after falling in love while filming the show, and got engaged while on a sun-soaked holiday in Croatia to celebrate Laila’s birthday.

The thrilled-looking birthday girl shared photos with her 22,000 Instagram followers, enthusing: “A whole week of being a diiiirty flirttttyyy thirty FIANCÉ !!!!!!!”

She punctuated her comments with a ring emoji, followed by a string of nine love hearts as she displayed footage from the glamorous looking holiday in Dubrovnik.

Prancing about in a white puff-sleeved dress just before jetting off, she’d looked as if she was perfectly embodying her future bridal role before she’d so much as received the proposal.

While neither seem to have aged a day since they first worked together, it’s Adam who has undergone the most dramatic transformation over the years, with his original ginger locks having changed colour to blonde.

Following his proposal, Laila told the world she felt “overwhelmed with love” – and went on to receive messages of congratulations from her celebrity pals on the app.

Game of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel exclaimed: “Awwwww congratulations!!!”, while Fresh Meat’s Greg McHugh wrote: “Congrats you legends of love!!!!”

While Laila first joined Benidorm as the girlfriend of Rob Dawson (played by Josh Bolt), reality didn’t match up with fiction as in real life, it was Adam who appealed to her romantically.

The show was sadly axed within a year of Laila joining, but it was hugely successful while it lasted, netting National Television Awards and even a BAFTA.

Earlier this year, suggestions of a revival circulated, but actress Siobhan Finneran, who played Janice Garvery, has dismissed the idea as merely a rumour.

“Cast and creatives met at a comedy convention for the show, back in the summer, and some stories about a possible TV revival grew out of that,” she clarified.

However, she added to The Sun: “Sadly that was all they were, rumours!”

“You should probably never say never to anything so popular but as far as I know it won’t be coming back at any point.”

While the show might not have a future, at least one real-life relationship emerged from the setting of the fictional Benidorm holiday resort which remains strong today.

Meanwhile, though Laila no longer has a primetime TV role on the go, she performed in the stage show Little Bits of Light this year.

The bride-to-be also played Zara in the Amazon Prime series Mood in 2022.
