Kate and Rio Ferdinand almost gave up on relationship after tough times with his kids

Rio and Kate Ferdinand have spoken candidly about how they nearly called time on their relationship when it proved hard for his kids to adapt to life with a step-mum.

The former The Only Way is Essex star, 31, married former footballer Rio Ferdinand in 2019, She recently started a podcast call Blended, where she opens up about being a step-mum to Rio's children and speaks to other families in similar situations.

In the latest podcast episode, Kate is joined by her husband as the couple opens up about the struggles of Rio's three children, Lorenz, 16, Tate, 14, and Tia, 12, adapting to having a step mum.

Rio welcomed his kids with wife Rebecca Ellison, who devastatingly died in 2015 aged just 34.

Kate and the ex-footballer also share son Cree and are currently expecting their second child together.

In a clip published on her Instagram, Kate speaks to her husband Rio as they open up about how they almost called it quits.

Asked by his wife what he's smiling at, Rio explains how happy he is that his three children get along with Kate.

He said: "I'm thinking about the kids and just thinking of how at the beginning it was difficult, but now, I'm just visualising loads of different scenarios where I might come in and like, you're doing Tia's hair, or she's not well and she's cuddling up to you or Tate, same thing cuddling you and making you laugh and you've got quite a funny sense of humour, similar together.

"Or Lorenz opening up and talking about things where he wasn't like that before. Like when you look at it like that, there's a lot of the yards that have been had and done over this time it's been good."

Kate then revealed: "Because you used to pray for days like this and you think, are they ever gonna come? Is all this worth it? That's what sometimes we used to get in bed and say, 'Is this worth it?'"

"I think if you genuinely, if there's love there innit, it's like that overrides it," Rio replies. "It's like them old songs, innit? 'Love overrides everything.'"

Rio's sweet but cheesy reply received an immediate reaction from Kate, who quipped he'd be bullied in their group chat for the comment.

Rio stood by his remark though, and got emotional as he revealed the love he feels for his family changed him as a person.

Kate captioned the video: "Today on blended we have my husband, Rio. We talk all things family & the journey we have been on to get to where we are today.

"This is a little insight into life for our family. To listen, search ‘Blended’ wherever you get your podcasts."

Fans were loving the episode, and several people shared their joy at the couple making things work.

One person said: "Love when you both chat about your blended family. Your honesty about it all is what we all need to hear. Just lovely to hear how things are going xx."

A second person said: "Rio is so lucky he found you and you are so lucky to have found them, the gods did good, so happy for yr little family x."

A third user penned: "Ah I love this. So happy after such trauma. Happy family."
