Kate Garraway’s ‘wake up call’ as GMB star ditches smoking for sake of her children

Kate Garraway has made the decision to give up smoking in order to be healthy for her children, a source has revealed.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 55, has faced a difficult few years as she’s been caring for her husband Derek Draper, who contracted Covid-19 early on in the pandemic and has been left with various ongoing health issues.

Since returning home in April 2021, Derek has required care and assistance as he has struggled to recover to full health.

The couple, who have been married for over a decade, share two children together: Darcey, 16 and Billy, 13.

And according to a source, Kate has decided to give up her cigarette habit in order to be healthier for her family.

The source told OK!: "Derek’s health has remained in this declining state for a while now and has faced a lot of set-backs in recent weeks and it’s given her a wake up call that she needs to be fit and well for her kids."

The source added that Kate has ended up losing weight due to the stresses of being her husband's full time carer – and is worried she could get ill if her smoking habit continues – leaving her children with two unwell parents.

"She wants to focus on looking after herself as well as Derek this year," they said.

"The stress of caring for him has caused her to gradually lose a lot of weight and she knows that smoking isn’t the right means of helping her to cope, so she’s making her own health the priority as she hates the thought of becoming ill herself and her children having to cope with two parents that are unwell."

Last month, Kate shared her fears that people were "fed up" of her talking about Derek and his health issues.

“You know, it is an onslaught — it is a long onslaught," Kate said on Lorraine, as she gave an update on Derek.

"I can see he has better days; he has worse days — he's thankfully at home now. It's been a long battle to get him back home again."

She continued: "I think it's very tough on him but it's very tough on the people around me.

"All jokes aside, Ben for all his unbelievable cheek, has been extraordinary because I can't help think all the people around me, people at GMB and radio as well, must be fed up to the back teeth.

"That is the problem I think if you are caring or have a long-term situation."
