Les Dennis’ age-gap joke about Amanda Holden resurfaces ahead of Strictly

Les Dennis discusses joining Strictly Come Dancing 2023

Newly confirmed Strictly Come Dancing star Les Dennis was married to his second wife Amanda Holden from 1995 to 2003.

The former couple met during a stage show production of The Sound of Music when she was 22 years old and he was 40.

In an unearthed interview, the 69-year-old actor recalled a humorous moment which led him to really notice his 18-year age gap with the now-52-year-old Britain’s Got Talent judge.

In 2019, on the RHLSTP podcast with Richard Herring, Les told how a plumber in their house referred to Amanda as “a kid”.

He explained: “In our house in Highgate and it was the Grand National Day and the plumber was there and Amanda came running in saying, ‘We need to put a bet on, it’s the Grand National’.

“So I said, ‘OK ten quid’ and she went, ‘We need to put more than that on’. I went, ’20’ and the plumber went, ‘Kids ey’,” which prompted the audience to laugh.

“I should’ve known from then,” he joked, referring to their breakdown of their marriage.

In the interview, Les also claimed people were “waiting” for it to go wrong.

Sadly their marriage did come to an end following Amanda’s highly publicised affair with Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey, which led to a brief split, before they rekindled and then broke up again for good.

Both have since moved on from their divorce with respective partners.

The ex Family Fortunes host has been married to Claire Nicholson since 2009 and they have a son and daughter.

Amanda tied the knot with former talent agency director Chris Hughes in 2008 and together they share two daughters.

Les recently admitted the pair no longer speak, but that there is no bad blood between them.

He told The Times: “Amanda was in the papers recently, saying some nice things about me. That was very kind of her.

“Maybe with time she has been able to look back and see things differently. We’re not in touch but I am happy that she’s happy.”

He continued: “I can watch Britain’s Got Talent without getting angry. To be honest it’s like watching a different person, someone I’ve never met.”

Les will take to the Strictly Come Dancing floor in a bid to win the Glitterball trophy later this year.

He said of joining the line-up: “I’m thrilled to be doing this iconic wonderful show as I approach my 70th birthday! In my career I’ve always gone for challenges outside my comfort zone and this is the ultimate one! Can’t wait.”
