Former One Direction star Liam Payne has opened up about the scars he has been left with after finding fame so young.

The singer, 29, entered The X Factor in 2010 and was placed into a group with the four other members of the band – Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan.

But the group have been on an indefinite hiatus since 2016 as they all went their separate ways after reaching meteoric heights and being one of the best selling boybands of all time.

However, in a radio interview, Liam opened up about the scars he has been left with after finding fame so young as he says he was not sure he knew exactly what he was signing up for.

On Colombia's W Radio, Liam stated: I don't really know if I knew what I signed up for when I started and I've been doing my job since I was 14-years-old I've been very lucky to hold the job for that long which is great but I do think it definitely left scars on me.

"You have to unpack a lot of stuff before you start this job. I wouldn't change a thing now that I am where I am, I've kind of made my own sense of why I ended up at this place."

He went onto say that his life's ambition is now to help others who find themselves in similar positions of finding fame so young and trying to navigate things by themselves.

He continued: "And like I said, it definitely gave me something to say and if I can help anybody out in my position, not so much on the fame side but the things that happened to me before and kind of stop that from happening to somebody else, that would be my life's dream.

"It's a great life and I have a lot of gratitude – but there were definitely low moments that I'll never minimise but it's just about having the right people around you at the right time and I was lucky to have people to watch my back when I was at my worst place and help me get the help that I need and not everybody is that lucky so, I'm double grateful to be on the other side of it now and to have something to say and like I said, it might change somebody's life."

He revealed that he spent last month at a wellness clinic in Louisiana in an attempt to heal some of the wounds he got from his time at the top.

Liam spoke openly about lashing out at the people close to him after One Direction members went their separate ways.

But he was thankful to have supportive people around him, including his ex-partner Cheryl from Girls Aloud who was supportive of his decision to go into the wellness clinic.

Liam, who shares a son with Cheryl called Bear, added: "There is a point when you hit rock bottom and you realise you have got to do something different as whatever you are doing right now isn’t working for you. I was in bad shape up until that point. Honestly, more than anything I want to say thank you to Bear and his mum for giving me a little bit of freedom to go and get well."
