Margot Robbie, 32, became a Hollywood icon after starring as Leonardo DiCaprio’s second wife in 2014’s The Wolf of Wall Street, with her catching the eye of the late Playboy founder. Hugh Hefner controversially offered the star the opportunity to appear on the front of the magazine, with Margot politely declining the proposed venture, with a very witty excuse.
After recently drawing a pay cheque of $12.5 million, Margot catapulted to the top spot on the coveted list of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses, with Wolf of Wall Street helping her get there.
The role featured numerous sexual scenes, including a full-frontal nude scene, and these naturally caught the attention of Hefner.
Speaking to US Weekly back in 2014, Hefner scouted the actress, without knowing her name.
He said: “The girl that plays [Jordan Belfort’s] wife in [Wolf of Wall Street] is very, very pretty.
“She should be in Playboy. Send her a message! We’re ready for her. She would be great.”
Margot, who was just 23 at the time, spurned the offer when she was asked about the Playboy founder’s proposal on a New Zealand radio station, The Edge.
She quipped: “I’ve put my family through enough.”
Hefner died aged 91 in 2017, after battling sepsis which was brought on by an E Coli infection.
He is interred at Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles, in the crypt beside Marilyn Monroe, for which he paid $75,000 in 1992.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times in 2009, he quipped: “Spending eternity next to Marilyn is an opportunity too sweet to pass up.”
Margot has since admitted she was apprehensive about the sex scenes being the talk of the internet.
However, when director Martin Scorsese suggested diluting things for her comfort, she made the decision to turn him down, in favour of preserving the integrity of the film.
Speaking to the Telegraph in 2014, she said: “I think nudity for the sake of nudity is shameful. If they’ve put it in just so that a girl gets her top off, then that’s disgusting. And you can always tell.
“But I also think it’s disgusting when someone would have got naked in real life, in the film they conveniently leave their bra on, or hold up the bed sheet. Seeing someone being choreographed into being covered up irritates me just as much.
“The whole point of Naomi is that her body is her only form of currency in this world.
“So when Marty [Scorsese] was trying to help me out, and said in the scene where she seduces Jordan perhaps I could have a robe on, I said she wouldn’t. She has to be naked. She’s laying her cards on the table.”
Margot has since reflected on the “embarrassment” she felt when shooting the seduction scene.
Speaking to Net A Porter, in 2018, Margot revealed: “It doesn’t come across when you’re watching the movie, but in reality, we’re in a tiny bedroom with 30 crew crammed in.
“All men. And for 17 hours I’m pretending to be touching myself.
“It’s just a very weird thing and you have to bury the embarrassment and absurdity, really deep, and fully commit.”
Margot has gone on to have leading roles in Hollywood blockbusters like Babylon, Suicide Squad, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as well as I, Tonya.
