Netflix viewers ‘freaked out’ within minutes of starting new horror documentary The Devil on Trial

Netflix viewers are left feeling ‘freaked out’ just minutes in to the streaming platforms newest British horror documentary – with some saying they had to turn it off.

‘The Devil on Trial’ dropped onto UK Netflix on October 17, delving into the terrifying true story that inspired The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It,’ starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as famous paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The bone-chilling documentary explores the first and only time ‘demonic possession’ has officially been used as a defense in a US murder trial.

In 1981, 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson violently murdered his landlord, 40-year-old Alan Bono, in Brookfield Connecticut – the first murder in the town’s 193-year history.

His defense in court was that the devil possessed him and made him do it, with the case attracting the attention of the Warrens.

Johnson claimed he was under the influence of Satanic forces when he stabbed the 40-year-old more than 20 times with a five-inch pocket knife after they got into an argument. 

At the core of Johnson’s defense was the alleged demonic possession of David Glatzel, his girlfriend Deborah’s 11-year-old brother.

Months before, in July of 1980, the boy woke up crying after having a vision of a menacing old man who told him, ‘Beware.’

David appears in the new Netflix doc to tell his story firsthand – Arne Johnson alleged that the entity that supposedly possessed David, is the one that possessed him too.

The new documentary goes through everything that happened leading up to the murder and throughout the trial that shocked the world – and viewers are left ‘unable to sleep’ and ‘chilled to the bone’.

One X (formerly known as Twitter) user wrote ‘Seven minutes into The Devil On Trial on Netflix and I’m freaked out. This is gonna be a good documentary’.

Others wrote ‘The Devil on Trial on Netflix is wiiiiild’ and ‘ngl this might be too scary for me’.

Someone else tweeted ‘Just watched The Devil On Trial. I thought the documentary was made to show parts that weren’t included in Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, but instead it discusses the dark side of what happened.

One terrified user even reported her own paranormal experience, writing ‘I’m watching the devil on trial and suddenly my laptop turns black during the part where they play the audiotapes, wtf?’

Others added ‘The Devil on Trial has me spooked lol’ and ‘after watching the devil on trial, I don’t know who to trust anymore’.

Viewers who made it to the end are claiming the documentary had a shocking conclusion.

One user wrote ‘just watched the netflix documentary ‘the devil on trial’ THE ENDING WAS SO’.

Another said ‘After watching the devil on trial it changed my point of view, what an ending’.
