The former butler and "confidante" of Princess Diana, Paul Burrell, has hit out at Prince Harry, suggesting that he has lost the plot" in the wake of the publication of his memoir, Spare.
Paul, 64, appeared on morning show Lorraine today (January 30) where he revealed that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and discussed the Duke of Sussex's book.
Harry's memoir was highly critical of his mother's butler, accusing him of “milking” Diana’s death for money when he penned his own memoir A Royal Duty in 2003, adding that it “made my blood boil”.
While the Prince does not directly name Paul, it is clear that this is who he is referring too, and is something that both he and his brother Prince William have accused him of.
At the time the book was published a statement from both Princes was issued by Clarence House, which accused Paul of “a cold and overt betrayal."
Harry has since claimed that he was not involved in the drafting of this statement, and that that he believes it didn't actually go far enough, writing that he wanted to confront Paul in person but William and King Charles, then the Prince of Wales, talked him out of it, saying all they could do was “issue a united condemnation”.
Discussing the way in which he's portrayed in Spare, Paul told Lorraine: "I was bewildered by it. He’s known me all his life as ‘Paul’. He knew how much I loved his mother and protected her memory, he knows all of that.
"Why did he call me ‘Mummy’s Butler?’ Why couldn't he have asked, come to me personally and said he wasn't happy with the situation?"
Paul continued: "I’ve always defended him down to the last minute and now I’m thinking, ‘Harry, you’ve lost the plot.’ What’s happened? There's been a shift in that young man, he's changed and I’m saddened by it.
“My mental health has taken a bashing, does he not consider that or the mental health of anybody that he writes about?”
This comes after Paul had previously spoken to Lorraine about Harry’s relationship with now-wife Meghan Markle, stating that he thinks the duke “heard Diana’s voice through Meghan”.
Addressing the ongoing royal rift between Harry and the rest of the royals, Paul said that it “wouldn’t have happened” had Diana still been here.
Paul went on to say about his romance with Meghan: “It’s because he married a 36 year old woman who whispered in his ear, ‘I want to change the world’. His mother was 36 when she died, and I think Harry was hearing his mother’s voice come through.
“It’s all mixed up in Diana. Diana is a constant in both boys’ lives.”
