Peter Kay’s ‘disaster’ date with wife saw him spend ‘bulk of evening’ in A&E

Peter Kay looks dramatically different in rare public appearance

Peter Kay and his wife Susan Gargan first met in 1998 in a nightclub in Bolton, when Peter was working at a local cinema and Susan was working at Boots.

The pair went on a date and then decided to have a second night out at an ice rink, which the comedian describes as a “disaster”.

Revealing all in 2013’s That Peter Kay Book, the 50-year-old explained: “I took a girlfriend ice skating once on our second date and I fell and broke my arm in two places.”

Despite spending “the bulk of the evening” in A&E, Peter says the “whole disaster worked out for the best”.

He went on: “Luckily…the girl took pity on my incompetence and eventually she married me.”

Peter and Susan dated for the next three years before marrying in 2001.

They also welcomed a son named Charlie later that year.

It is also reported that the couple share two more children, but they have been kept out of the public eye.

Explaining why he likes to keep his family life private, Peter said in 2011: “I never wanted to be ‘the big I-Am’.

“I’m actually shy and my salvation is coming home and being normal. My children are still young and I want to be at home with them.”

Peter himself stepped back from the spotlight in 2017 when he cancelled his comeback tour.

In a statement on Twitter, the comedian said: “Due to unforeseen family circumstances, I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects.

“This unfortunately includes my upcoming stand-up tour, Dance for Life shows and any outstanding live work commitments.

“My sincerest apologies. This decision has not been taken lightly, and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first. I’ve always endeavoured to protect my family’s privacy from the media.

“I hope that the media and public will continue to respect our privacy at this time. Once again, I’m very sorry.”

Peter eventually returned to the stage in December 2022 with his first live comedy tour in 12 years.

After adding more dates, Peter will take to the stage in Birmingham’s Utilita Area tonight before performing in London on Saturday.
