One day on since a Dutch translation of Omid Scobie’s new book allegedly revealed the names of two senior royals who allegedly raised ‘concerns’ over Prince Archie’s skin colour, Talk TV host Piers Morgan has publicly named the royals in question live on air.
The original claim, made by Meghan Markle during her infamous 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, alleged that while she was pregnant with her first child, “several conversations” had taken place between herself, Prince Harry and senior members of the royal family about “how dark” Archie’s complexion would be.
But this week, the claims once again were propelled into the spotlight when a Dutch translation of Mr.Scobie’s book Endgame, seemingly revealed the name of the two people who were alleged to have made the comments.
The detail was spotted by Dutch royal journalist, Rick Evers, who shared the news on twitter, before the publisher, Xander Uitgevers, was immediately ordered to pull the books from the shelves and place an immediate “hold” on sales until the matter could be rectified.
So far, the names only appear to have been revealed in the Dutch translation of the book, with Mr Scobie himself having already admitted that he was prohibited by law from revealing the names himself in the UK.
Despite this however, Piers Morgan made the decision to reveal the names live on Talk TV on Wednesday 29 November, while also adding that he didn’t believe the claims made against the two royals.
"I don't believe any racist comments were ever made by any of the Royal Family and until there is actual evidence of those comments I will never believe it,” he told viewers.
“But now we can start the process of finding out if they ever got uttered, what the context was and if there was any racial intent at all. Like I said I don't believe there was."
Piers then went on to name the alleged royals, but OK! have chosen not to repeat the names.
In addition to Piers’ comments, Mr Scobie also issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon insisting the naming of the two royals had been an “error in translation” before adding that he was “happy” it was being swiftly corrected by his publisher.
Speaking to the Dutch chat show RTL Boulevard, he said: "The book is in several languages, and unfortunately I do not speak Dutch."
He then continued: “But if there are translation errors, I'm sure the publishers will have it under control. I wrote and edited the English version. There's never been any version that I've produced that has names in it.”
His publisher in the Netherlands however, made no reference to a translation error in their statement, which instead simply stated that “an error that occurred in the Dutch edition” prompting it to be pulled from shelves.
The statement in full read: “The rectified edition of Eindstrijd by Omid Scobie will be in bookstores on Friday 8 December. Xander Uitgevers temporarily removed the book from sale, due to an error that occurred in the Dutch edition.”
