Richard Madeley kept in touch with Phillip Schofield after savage ITV exit

Richard Madeley has admitted that he is still in contact with Phillip Schofield after he sensationally quit his role on This Morning.

Phillip stepped down from the ITV daytime show in May this year after he revealed that he had an affair with a younger colleague.

Richard, who previously worked as a presenter on This Morning until 2001, apparently still speaks to Phillip.

According to The Sun, he believes that Phillip’s exit was “savage and brutal”.

“I feel very sorry for Phillip – it seemed a pretty savage outcome after 21 years (in the job),” Richard started.

He continued: “It seemed quite brutal to be honest.

“I took a paternal interest in it – I kept in touch, told him to take it easy and that it’ll be all right.”

Richard added: “We’ve all been through terrible experiences and the worst ones are the phones that come out of a clear blue sky and you don’t see them coming.”

Phillip, 61, has kept himself out of the public eye since his dramatic departure from This Morning.

He was recently “spotted” back on television in a new documentary on Netflix four months later.

A clip of Phillip and his former co-host Holly Willoughby appears in the third episode of Who Killed Jill Dando?.

The video footage was originally broadcast in the spring of last year and marked the 23rd anniversary of Jill’s murder.

Meanwhile, Holly Willoughby has continued her position on This Morning alongside different hosts such as Alison Hammond.

Richard said that he doesn’t plan to return to the ITV sofa to replace Phillip.

“I enjoyed it but wouldn’t go back,” he said.

Richard is currently fronting the ITV show Good Morning Britain as one of their main broadcasters.
