Pointless creator Richard Osman, 51, took to Twitter today to blast internet trolls over negative comments aimed at some of the contestants who have appeared on the BBC’s Only Connect. His comments came after the quiz show’s host, Victoria Coren Mitchell, 50, also hit back at the online trolls.

Victoria tweeted in view of her 672,900 followers: “Sometimes, a handful of unhappy people decide to attack our quiz contestants for being unconventional. Best ignored.

“The OC studio is a place of love, fun, teamwork and spirited competition among equals, and that is what 99.9% of our viewers see.

“ON WITH THE QUESTIONS, PLEASE,” she added with a heart emoji.

A number of high-profile figures weighed in on the issue, including author and former Pointless host Richard.

Replying to the tweet, Richard told his 1.2 million followers: “If you are different in any way in this world, there is a group of people who will never, ever let you forget it.

“Whether they’re scared, unhappy or just plain mean, who knows,” he continued.

“But if you’re one of them, learn to let people be different without feeling the need to comment.

Later, Richard added: “I should have said ‘comment negatively’ by the way.

“Some people are drawn in very kind and funny ways to people who ‘seem different’.

Meanwhile, Labour MP Jess Phillips also commented: “It is by far my favourite quiz, the lovely eccentricity of the teams and their enthusiasm for the esoteric is the thing that makes it.

“My family used to be baffled by the questions now we get it. It’s a joy,” she added enthusiastically.

Only Connect is a quiz show that sees two teams compete against one another to make connections between apparently unconnected things using a combination of knowledge and lateral thinking.

The show airs after Mastermind and before University Challenge, completing the line-up of Monday night quizzes on BBC Two.

While the contestants don’t go home with any big prizes, those who win undoubtedly prove themselves to be an incredibly brainy bunch.

Fans of the show took to the comments section to share their own thoughts on the show.

Viewer Jill Bartram added: “Love the show, usually get a bit of the wall right and some missing vowel questions, am always astonished at how your quizzers get any of the other questions right.” (sic)

While Karyn M. Cooke, who previously appeared on the show, wrote under Victoria’s post: “Can confirm all contestants are talented and lovely.

“The host is alright too,” she added with a wink. “However, from a personal level, my partner has requested I now only apply for quizzes that are lucrative in some way.

“Apparently quizzing where there is no monetary reward is not acceptable.”

“Meanwhile we’re considering charging for the biscuits,” Victoria quipped back.

Only Connect airs on Monday night at 8pm on BBC Two.
