Roman Kemp taught dad Martin ‘everything he knows’ about manscaping

Celebrity Gogglebox fans didn't know where to look while watching Martin Kemp discuss his "manscaping" preferences with his son Roman back in June.

And now Roman, 29, has taken credit for teaching the 59-year-old Spandau Ballet star all he knows about shaving down below.

While promoting his new autobiography, Roman told OK!: “The most ridiculous thing is, I taught him that! I taught my dad everything he knows about manscaping… the facing back to front on the toilet – sorry to be so graphic!”

The Channel 4 show kicked off with Martin swapping shaving tips with his son after being forced to watch Naked Attraction.

Martin cheerfully told Capital DJ Roman – and all the viewers at home – that he likes to sit on the loo backwards so he can shave his bits and handily use the top of the cistern to rest the razor on.

Martin said: "Always while sitting on the loo, full gone. Well sometimes I don't mean to go all the way and it just happens."

While viewers will have been used to watching the father and son duo rinse each other constantly on the reality tv series, Roman has hailed his dad his “hero and best mate” underneath the jokes, describing their relationship as “insanely close”.

Writing in his new autobiography Are You really OK?, he said: “I am absolutely blessed that we have one of the best father-and-son relationships of anyone I know. We can and do talk about anything and everything.”

Roman added to OK! that he would also love to replicate his parents Martin and Shirlie’s true romance after a string of failed relationships. But he admitted that even though he is tentatively on dating apps, he admits he’s not yet ready for a relationship.

He said: "Don’t get me wrong, I come from a family of romance. My grandparents were together from when they were 16 and they died on the same day, then you’ve got my mum and dad who have been together for so long.

"In an ideal world I’d meet someone in the middle of the street but that’s not reality. But I need to sort myself out first. I’m not ready to think about someone else until I can sort my own head out.”

Roman unflinchingly tackles the subject of suicide after contemplating taking his own life in the summer of 2019 in his upcoming part autobiographical, part self-help book.

At the time, he’d just landed his gig on I’m A Celebrity where he would later endear himself to the nation. But Roman suffered a breakdown when he stopped taking medication for the depression he’s battled since he was 15.

A year later, during the pandemic, Roman’s best friend, Joe Lyons – the producer who’d nurtured his career – took his own life aged 31. In August

Ever since his friend’s death he has been fighting the stigma still surrounding men’s mental health, aware he too could have been a statistic: suicide remains the biggest killer of adult men under 45.

Roman’s book, Are You Really OK? (Mirror Books, £18.99), is on sale from 27 October
